William Roy Simpson passed away unexpectedly on May 30, 2024 at the age of 79. Bill was a native Californian, born at Mercy Hospital on March 5, 1945 to Sam and Anna Simpson. He was the first of 3 children, a big brother to Sherry and Ron. Bill graduated from Crawford High School as a varsity wrestler in 1963. After reuniting at a high school reunion a few years ago, Bill joined a group of buddies to gather for breakfast each month. After high school, he attended San Diego State as an engineering major. While there, he decided that he wanted to become a police officer. Unfortunately, he didn’t reach the height restrictions . . . fortunately, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps by joining the San Diego City Fire Department.
In 1966, he married his first wife, Cindy, and they welcomed 2 children, Brigette and Travis. As a family, they enjoyed skiing, camping and adventuresome trips. As an adult, Travis and his wife, Marina, made Bill a “Papa” when their first son, Ryan, was born, followed by the twins, Sophia and Jacob. Daughter Brigette brought additional joy to the family when son, Max, joined the family.
Through his friendship with fellow firefighter, Malcom Barnett, Bill developed a passion for hiking and became an avid lover of the outdoors, a passion that stayed with him for the rest of his life. He spent over 4 decades leading friends and family on backpack trips through the Sierra Nevadas. As Travis and Brigette grew older, they joined their dad as he instilled in them his adventurous spirit.
In 1986, Bill married Margee and added a stepson, Justin, to his family. Bill learned about living in the country, which was challenging for a city boy! He turned a hill of dirt into a vibrant and tranquil garden where he could reflect on his deep faith and blessings in life. Bill added to his role of “Papa” when Justin’s boys, Gage and Cael were born.
Bill was so honored to be a San Diego City Firefighter. His dedication to his profession was unwavering, elevating him to the position of Captain. The Brotherhood of Firefighters was ingrained in his soul. As he traveled, he enjoyed interacting with firefighters from other cities.
In his retirement, Bill broadened his horizons by traveling not only domestically but internationally. He was wide-eyed as he arrived in each of the 42 countries that we explored. He was captivated by the traditions, cultures and people of each country.
Bill was proceeded in death by his wonderful parents, Sam and Anna Simpson, his dear sister, Sherry and his infant daughter, Amy.
