William Yin Shaw was born in Nanjing, China on November 18, 1933.
At the age of 14, Bill and his parents, along with his 5 brothers and sisters, fled Communist China and immigrated to Taiwan. There, he entered the Taiwan Naval Academy and served in the Navy as an officer for 8 years. As a Lieutenant Commander, he fought bravely in the 1958 battles at Quemoy and was trained as a fighter pilot.
In a pivotal moment in his life, Bill made the decision to come to the US for graduate school. This decision would change his life trajectory and impact the lives of countless others. He received a PhD in theoretical physics from Indiana University. While at IU, he met and married Tai-li and had a daughter, Amy.
In 1973, he and his family moved to San Diego, California. After working as a computer programmer for Scripps Oceanography and SAIC, Bill and Tai-li founded a successful software company, IBA, Inc. in 1981. Always at the forefront of technology, he received a number of patents for his data encryption algorithm, SAVED.
As the first member of the Shaw family to come to the United States, he helped his brothers, sisters and their families immigrate to the US. He truly lived the American dream.
In 1999, Bill married Jonnie and together they raised his step-son, Michael, in La Jolla. He and Jonnie enjoyed traveling, dancing, singing karaoke, and spending time with family and friends.
In his retirement, Bill enjoyed writing poetry, a passion of his that started in his twenties. For 46 years, he lived in La Jolla where he welcomed family members to visit and stay with him. He was passionate about family, the Shaw legacy, and the success of the next generations.
Bill was fortunate to live a long and full life in good health, until very recently. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on March 13, 2024 at the age of 90.
Bill leaves behind Jonnie, his wife of 25 years, his daughter, Amy Shaw Hosler, son-in-law, Matthew Hosler, four grandchildren (Ryan, Allison, Aidan and Jackson), his step-son, Michael Shaw, daughter-in-law, Ting-ting, and two granddaughters (Yixin and Sophie). He is also survived by his first wife and friend (Tai-li), older brother (Wake), younger brother (Wei-hua), younger sister (Wei-ping), and 12 nieces and nephews.
