Wayne Calvin Smith passed away peacefully in the Point Loma home that he and his wife of 71 years, Barbara, had built in 1954. Forever giving, Wayne spent the final week of his life “holding court” in the family room, using all his remaining energy to convey love and guidance to the countless family and friends who visited each day, including all 7 of his children (Steve, Daryl, Rick, David, Lori, Mark, and Jeff), 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Wayne grew up in Point Loma and attended SDSU before joining the Army to serve in the Korean War. Following the war, Wayne worked in the family-owned San Diego Paper & Chemical Company and ultimately became president of San Diego Paper until it was purchased by the Kent Landsberg Paper Company.
In retirement, Wayne directed his energy on 50 acres of rolling hills that he and Barbara purchased in Sonoma’s Alexander Valley. Icaria Creek is now a flourishing vineyard with a beautiful home they’ve graciously shared with family and friends over the past 25 years.
His greatest joy, however, was sailing his boat out of the San Diego Yacht Club, which he continued to do well into his 90’s. The club also served as a perfect venue for the entire family to gather and celebrate countless milestones.
Always kind and grateful, Wayne attributed his blessed life to the strong faith he developed as a member of Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church, where a memorial will be held Saturday, February 12th at 11am. Address: 2128 Chatsworth Blvd, San Diego, CA 92107. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Wayne’s name to the church’s endowment fund.
