Wayman C. Dunlap, 81, of Vista, CA, passed away peacefully in his home on April 11. He is predeceased by his parents, William and Mabel Dunlap of Oklahoma. His career and passion had always been journalism. After his tour in the U.S.Navy, he held writer/photographer positions at daily papers in Arkansas, advancing to one of the state daily newspapers, the Arkansas Democrat and the Associated Press. He led political campaigns for the Arkansas State Attorney General and Governor offices in the 1960s. He was the youngest news director of NBC affiliates at KARK TV in Little Rock, AR, which became the first to broadcast in color.
After moving his young family to California, he entered school to finish college at night while working as a writer for the Oceanside daily paper and rising to City Editor, while also working as a stringer for the Los Angeles Times. Always a strong advocate for the military, his interests also included motorcycling and fast cars. Mr. Dunlap took a flying lesson, fell in love with the freedom of flight, and became a private pilot. This love led to the purchase of Pacific Flyer Aviation News in 1981, which he headed as owner, publisher, and editor until its closing in April 2013, with readers worldwide and free distribution to military squadrons stateside and overseas.
Mr. Dunlap is survived by his wife Candy, his daughter Victoria Dunlap and son-in-law Will Neblett of San Diego, his son Chris Dunlap and grandchildren Grayson and Analisa of Fallbrook, and his sister and brother-in-law Linda and Gary Wheatley of Shawnee, Oklahoma, and his brother-in-law JohnPaul Jones of Jacksonville, Arkansas.
