Vera Ann Barreras

Vera Ann Barreras was a modest woman, quiet and observant in her ways. She was trustworthy and traditional in her approach to her life and in her relationships. She was tough-minded with the kind of “stick to it” attitude that earned the respect of all who knew her. She was also a woman who was meticulous, carefully disciplined, and orderly in virtually everything she undertook. Realistic about life, she was always at the ready, prepared to take on responsibility.

She was the daughter of Joseph and Lola Barreras. Vera grew up in San Diego, California.

Vera was raised with three siblings. She had two older brothers Joe and David and one older sister Rosemary. Vera was usually involved in all sorts of activities with her siblings. She and her siblings experienced rivalries typical of a growing family, but they shared many life experiences over the years.

A typical teenager, Vera had a fairly happy high school experience, making that critical transition from adolescence to adulthood. She graduated from Rosary High School in 1960. She enjoyed some classes more than others, having favorite subjects and teachers. Her favorite class in high school was History.

Always considered a “good” friend to those she knew, Vera enjoyed a broad group of acquaintances and several very close friends during her lifetime. Later in life, she became friends with Nancy McGlone and Jill McCall.

Fortunately, Vera enjoyed what she did for a living. Showing a strong work ethic, Vera worked diligently and did her best to succeed in her career. Her primary occupation was Retail Management. She was employed for 43 years by Daves Display World. Vera always sought to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done.

Vera enjoyed her leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. Her favorite pursuits were collecting movies, coins, antiques and going to Las vegas. She was content to enjoy her favorite pastimes alone but was also willing to share her interests with others.

Vera found pleasure in sports. Recreational sports included swimming and fishing. Vera was also something of a sports fan and enjoyed following her favorite events whenever she had the chance to do so. Tops on her list were baseball and football.

Vera enjoyed traveling and time away on vacations. It was a chance for her to renew and relax, to visit new places and experience new things. Favorite vacations included houseboat trip on Lake Meade, visiting friends in Pennsylvania and Las Vegas.

Vera was a lover of animals and cherished her pets. One of her favorites was Sammi, a Yorkshire Terrier. They were best friends for seventeen years. Her family was rounded out by her dogs Spooter, Alfie, Sammi and Dusty.

When Vera’s retirement finally arrived in 2003, she was well prepared. Her new life involved staying in San Diego. In retirement, she found new pleasure in traveling, following politics and reading history books. Even in retirement, Vera continued to stay in touch with her old friends while making plenty of new acquaintances. Vera was active in her new community and felt fulfilled with the opportunities retirement offered her.

Vera passed away on July 15, 2010 at Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego, California. Fought a long battle with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Pneumonia. She is survived by brothers David and Joe, sister Rosemary, partner Linda, niece Diane nephews Peter, Joe and Michael.

Simply stated, Vera was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by her family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Vera leaves behind her a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life she touched will always remember Vera Ann Barreras.
