Van was uniquely special as a very private, very particular person. One had to work to be invited into her life as I so fondly remember from the beginning of our 46 years, 44 years of marriage.
She never thought of herself as intelligent but as a warm, compassionate companion, mother, and wife who as those who ever met her remember that she was One in 10 million both in conduct and in spirit.
She was the "dog lady" who cared deeply for animals, including in her research.
She wants everyone to remember her as she was ever the brilliant verbal skills in many languages, including the language of love. She told me almost daily and it was she that was responsible in large part for my many career successes that others remarked at times at my changes. That story continues to this very time. Her health kept her from a career as a Pathologist but all she worked with her understood her amazing skills in the laboratory, with patients and medical staff that were about as close to 100% as humanly possible.
She had a passion for reading, especially spy novels and consumed them all. Her skill at newspaper puzzles match that of my Father who did them in ink also.
Her sons, Adrien, and Paul Roberts, know of her great generosity, her belief in the power of God, and who had such high standards of conduct. Van helped me earn a "C" as a stepparent which ain't easy for an Alpha Male such as myself. She loved many people; even though not extremely well acquainted with my father, Harold "Si" C. Sizemore, loved him. She got him to send to her a copy of my baby picture that Si carried in his billfold until the day of his passing. Even my very critical (I take after her somewhat, particularly in my Professional life) Mother Vivian Ginter Stevenson(remarried name) told me what a good and fine person Van was and she said, "You two take of each other!" We always did so even under pain.
It is my belief that she knew her time was coming and often said she was ready- with people like her Father and Uncle Dien that she was anxious to see again- and that she chosen Memorial Day weekend to enter the afterlife because of the extreme importance she always placed on Veterans shown vividly in her every interaction with staff and patients at the VAMCs and Indian Health Service (PHS) that she worked. Van was mentioned in many Medical Publications including at NIH and MINDD as well as in papers presented by Dr. Roy Meals, VA/UCLA West Los Angeles.
For all, take your memories as the special ones they were from a heaven- sent angel who will sometime near be perfect in mind and spirit. And may her memories be a comfort as she has commanded!
Warm Regards,
David Gerald Sizemore, BS,MS, JD, PE, Esquire this 10th Day of June in the year of our Lord 2023.
