Grandpa Simon was a very special person. When we visited as kids, he was an easy-going grandfather who was okay with us being creative outside, like making a teepee out of the branches he cut down, or when we would tinker with his tools in the garage. We always enjoyed listening to his military stories and we were very proud of him. Through the years, he was there to support us at different events and milestones in our lives which meant a lot. His wisdom that he shared with us is something we will carry with us. We are thankful that we had a really wonderful grandfather and we will miss him.

As I scroll through the pictures and watch Dad’s video tribute, I think back to all the wonderful times that were shared during my growing years and into adulthood.  Many pictures of when we played golf together and memories of celebrating many birthdays and holidays with Dad; memories that seem like they happened just yesterday.

Miguel and I helped Mom and Dad move to Orange County in March 2018 and for us it was the best move we ever made.  The move was not only for social reasons but more importantly for health reasons, and as time progressed Dad became very well-known at the Kaiser facility where he received his medical care.

Since 2018 I feel that our relationship became closer.  We started to appreciate his little quirks a lot more and found many of his little sayings and mannerisms much more endearing.  

Dad was truly selfless; always concerned with the needs and wishes of others over his own.  Always giving others the benefit of the doubt. 

Dad was also a true Patriot and priceless was the smile he had on his face when he realized a Veterans Day Flag was sponsored in his name in 2022 and 2023; and his priceless reaction in 2023 with the Flyover by the Condor Squadron Vintage WWII planes during the Veterans Day celebration.  I will forever remember that moment.

What made dad happy?  Desserts!! Oh, that memorable twinkle in his eye when he saw his birthday dessert, a lemon meringue pie, or even the simplest pudding dish.  I recall dad stating “I wish my tongue was longer so I can lick the bottom of the dish”!

There are so many memories but these were the most cherished.

I have so many memories of my Father-In-Law or as I would call him “Daddy or Papi”.   One memory that comes to mind is how he was not very fond of hugs, so what did I do?  I make it a point to hug him as many times as I could every time I saw him.  I am blessed to have known Simon and shared so much time with him both at home and on the golf course.  He taught me how to play the game of golf and because of this I was able to spend hours on-end with him.
I learned so much from him and for that I will always be thankful, during the last years of his life I spent a fair amount of time with him, to the point that he would greet me at the door with “You again, don’t you have other places to be?” and then he would chuckle with that smile of his that reminded me of Mr. Roper from the old comedy TV show -Three’s Company.  The rest of the other times he would greet me with “Hey Cool!!”.  😊. 

He was a very smart man; I could talk to him about all kinds of subjects like sports, politics, cars, the military and of course golf.  If he wanted to know something that I did not know he would say “Ask her”; the first time he said this to me I responded “Ask HER Who?”, he said you know that girl in your phone she knows everything- he meant Siri.  One time he asked a series of questions that I tried to explain but I think I failed miserably; he wanted to know how the internet worked, what was WiFi and what was an APP and how it all worked.

I could go on and on sharing memories and great times that I had with my “Papi”!  
I am so fortunate, having had the opportunity to be a part of his life, and honored that he considered me as his son.
I will forever be thankful to him; I will miss him tremendously and will always have him in my heart.

Simon, you are missed much more than mere words can express. Your love for your family was an unwavering and integral part of who you were and all that you did, and your legacy lives on in those whom you poured yourself into over the course of your life. I’m grateful for many years of countless memories that include birthday and holiday celebrations where your often quiet, always observant presence was a blessing. The now empty place at the dinner or game table will undoubtedly bring tears of sadness but also smiles of gratitude for the treasured memories you left us with. You always seemed to appreciate the carefully written, meaningful messages your loved ones wrote in your birthday cards. You were loved, and we wanted you to know, year after year. I am thankful for you, the life you lived and the love you shared. May your soul rest in peace, and may perpetual light shine upon you until we meet again.

To the Saucedo family, 
I am so sorry for your loss.  My memories of Simon include his great, heartfelt smile, his sense of humor and his calmness. I hope your memories remain strong to bring you comfort during the times ahead.  As you grieve his passing, I hope you can celebrate his spirit, his accomplishments and his ‘Simonisms’.

Doc, I remember recruiting your Dad to be my teammate and asking him to join my bowling league every Thursday night at 9pm at Kearny Mesa.  He began to like to bowl so he asked that I go with him to the ProShop to help him buy his own bowling ball, bag and the required shoes.  We never won a trophy but it was all for fun-that's what it was all about-FUN!   We bowled at Kearny Mesa for about a year and a half, but one summer he asked if he could bowl with me at Poway Lanes and I stated "of course".

Saucedo Family

My father, Jr. worked as a bus driver for  San Diego Transit where he met Simon and Lucy.  As that friendship flourished, I had the honor and privilege of having Simon and Lucy as my Godparents for Holy Communion. The Lord chose the best people for my life.   Unbeknownst to them, I consider them my Godparents for Baptism as I never had a relationship with my other Godparents.

Nino Simon was a man that loved his family so much and was so evident to see him with his children.  His smile...oh that smile just melted your heart.  He had a such a warm and welcoming smile with the demeanor of a teddy bear.   I will miss him tremendously, but I know he is listening to music and having a beer with my father.   I also have comfort knowing he is at peace and watching over all of us, especially my Nina Lucy.  Nina, he will always be with you protecting you.

Nino, thank you for your service.  No words could ever measure the sacrifice made for our protection and freedom.

When I was blessed to be invited into this family, Mr. Simon and I would have conversations at holiday gatherings and he always made me feel at home.  He will be dearly missed when I come to visit.

Pops, you will truly be missed. Your sweet smile and always welcoming me and my family into your home. There are a lifetime of memories going back to when Ruthie and I met in elementary school. Moms, Ruthie and I always getting you hamburgers from Jack in the Box. Your favorite. When my mom and I would go visit you and moms just to hang out. We even made tamales and you went to get us lunch, cuz we were working hard. Those tamales came out good. Martin remembers when he would go to S.D. Transit to work on the radios. He would tell me "I saw Pops today, standing there with his rag in his back pocket." Pops would say "What, I'm on my break." he would say to Martin every time he saw him. So, so many memories. You will be forever in our hearts.  Love you Pops. Rest in Peace.

We will truly miss such a wonderful dad, grandpa, & father-in-law. 
Simon was a kind, generous, good person who was always there for his family.   He leaves us many special & funny memories which we cherish. We'll always remember him in his favorite white 
t-shirts and the memories of the many laughs we shared, especially while playing games as a family, will bring a smile to our faces for years to come.  We feel blessed that we had him in our lives and that now we have another caring angel watching over us.  He will be forever in our hearts.

Bill and I were so blessed to have your family as neighbors!  It was fun to share the growing up years of the kids in our families  - grade school, high school and college graduations.  We always marveled at how fast the years were passing by, especially as our kids began to marry and have their own families.  Those years were busy for sure, but we also cherished the time when it was just Bill and me, Lucy and Simon.  There were garage chats (Simon knew the use and advantage of every tool!), watching Ruthie and Lucy create mountains of tamales for parties and holidays, and always the warm  sharing of our everyday lives.  Simon and Bill, Lucy and Judy  -  I will remember our good times forever.  Thank you, God!        (And Simon, we know who ate that other half of the apple pie!)

It seems as if was yesterday when I met Simon for the first time.  Actually, it was many years ago... at a New Years Eve party in my house.  
Simon and his wife Maria, (Lucy) who I had met before at our work place, came over to celebrate that night with us.
Simon was all heart!  He loved his family, his home, his friends and playing Golf.
Through all the years that I knew Simon, he was always the same; friendly and happy to see people coming to visit him and his family...
Simon is now at his forever home and though here we are going  him  very much, we know that up there, above the clouds, he is well, waving at us and getting ready to play a round of Golf.  

Here, we all  be waiting to met you again, Simon... somewhere around the stars?

Two Memories of Uncle Simon
Golf and Pops - The two memories that I have of Uncle Simon is playing golf and his support to my father when Bill C. Tamayo Sr. passed away. Regarding golf, Uncle Simon taught me the basics about golf course etiquette and definitely always shot much lower scores than me. When my father was sick in 2010, Uncle Simon and Aunt Lucy visited with him a few times and were by his side when he took his last breath. Thank you Uncle Simon for everything and you will be missed.

I first met Simon through his daughter,  Ruth, when we were doing a real estate transaction.  I could not get over how he and Maria kept their house. Simon was an original  DYI person- runs in the family. You could see how he took pride in the things that he did. He loved to tinker in his garage, and I was completely amused at how he had everything so organized! Once Simon moved to the OC, he became my husband‘s patient. Dr. O and I loved his smile,  jokes and great disposition (even though he was visiting the dentist). He will be missed and we send our sincere condolences and prayers to his family. I know he’s organizing that big garage in the sky.  Fondly,  The Ogaz family. 🙏🙏🙏

I am deeply saddened by the passing of your dad. It was an honor and a privilege to care for him during his time with us. Please know that you are surrounded by people who care about you and I hope you find comfort in knowing that.  
I remember when we first started talking about his care how we had to be strategic in the timing and the words used as to not make him upset. Thank you for relinquishing that trust over to me, Ruth. I know you were scared at first because you weren't sure if I would be able to handle his stern personality, but I feel like after our initial conversation I looked forward to talking to him as much as he wanted to talk to me. Thank you for entrusting me with his care. It meant a lot.
