Robert Magoon

Robert "Bob" Magoon was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 4,1942 to Ray and Evelyn Magoon. Bob had three siblings, Jim, Dan and Barbara. Bob was a baby when Evelyn and Ray moved their family to California, eventually settling in San Diego. He spent his younger years growing up in the Lomita Village neighborhood, where he caused his fair share of mischief and formed lasting friendships.

In 1959, Bob enlisted in the Army at the age of 17. He spent the majority of his service in Germany, finding great pleasure in touring Europe while on leave. After 4 years of service, he returned to San Diego where he married his high school sweetheart, Patti Dixon. Bob and Patti were married 25 years and share 2 children together, Trisha and Robbie.

Bob went to work for Crown Chemical in 1967, working his way from the ground up in the company… from servicing and driving delivery trucks, to sales, to operations, to Vice President and co-owner. He was so well liked and respected by all, and he really enjoyed the people he worked with and the job he did… it’s what kept him there for 40 years!

In 1995, Bob married Louisa Herrera. Along with her daughter Leola, Bob and Louisa share a son, Jared. They settled in Escondido where they eventually opened their own business, "The Grand Tea Room", after Bob retired. He was very active in the behind-the-scenes operations of the business, and liked chatting with customers and other local business owners.

Known to many as "Mr. Bob", he was a man who could fix anything, build anything, and reveled in the challenge of solving a problem (not without a few choice words along the way, though). It didn’t matter how big or small the job was… it could be fixing a leaky faucet, building cabinets, or restoring his cherished 1967 Buick. He found great satisfaction in a job well done, and took pride in every project he took on. Bob also loved having a good time - a hot game of poker, a big fish on the end of a line, and a day on the greens (attempting to master his swing) were some of his favorite things to do. But nothing compared to spending time with his family. Whether it was sharing a meal with one of his kids, manning the grill at a family BBQ, or being at a major event, Bob was there with a smile and ready to make sure everyone had what they needed. His 7 grandkids - Anthony, Andrea, Roman, Ryan, Roxy, Monroe and Maverick - held an extra special place in his heart. Playing with them, watching them compete in sports, being present for special events, being silly (and maybe a little mischievous) with them, as well as guiding and teaching them brought him such pride and joy. There was nothing Bob would not do for his family!

So many characteristics set Bob apart from most, and made him the type of person to aspire to be like. His love and devotion to family and friends, his kindness and compassion, his generosity, his sense of humor, his stellar work ethic, his knowledge and talent, and so much more. These are the things that endeared him to everyone in his personal and professional life. Bob also showed strength and resilience throughout his life, which were also evident in his determination to battle cancer for the past 8 years. He fought hard, and kept the well-being of his family, his sharp wit, and sense of humor about him until his passing on Saturday, December 29, 2018 surrounded by his loved ones.

Anyone who knew Bob was lucky to have learned from him, laughed with him, and been loved by him. We will miss and love him always.
