He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1945 and was a captain of a landing boat at Normandy on D-Day, where he surprisingly met up with his older brother who was a Marine. After the War he had the opportunity to be around his younger brother’s horses in San Diego County and developed a love of horses. He eventually purchased a horse named Pawney and a part-interest in a racehorse named Kimmee Jean. The racehorse won one race in Mexico and was second in another race, but the expense of training and feeding a racehorse was too much and Richard had to make the difficult decision to sell her.
Richard was a member of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, as he worked for many years as a supervisor of a crew of commercial painters. His love of music, singing and dancing gave him great pleasure, and he particularly loved to sing “Blue Skies” at family gatherings during the holidays.
Because of his love of dancing, he met his future wife, Bertie McClanahan, and together they spent many hours in San Diego dancing and enjoying music from the big band era. They married in 1981 and shared a life together until her death in 2003.
He is survived by his loving family: Brother Danny Driscoll and wife Donna, stepson Tom McClanahan and wife Jackie, two grandchildren Ryan McClanahan and Heather Sweatt, three great grandsons Brayden Sweatt, Colin McClanahan, and Ethan McClanahan, and caregiver and best friend Keela Dudley, who lovingly cared for him in his final years.
The family wishes to thank the VA Hospital and physicians for all their wonderful care and support. Richard lived a long and happy life and will be truly missed by all who knew him.
