Reuben R. Hanshew, Jr. March 17, 1964 - January 19, 2016 San Diego Reuben was a man of great faith. He always maintained his values of faith in God and service to others. Over the years he came to help many people, making lifelong close friends in the many organizations to which he belonged. His kindness and generosity reflected the values instilled in him by his parents Ray and Mary, and he was loved deeply by his large extended family. He was an active and committed member of St. Brigid Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Christian movement Cursillo. He sponsored a program for dental services to disadvantaged people in Peru out of his compassion for people in need. Reuben also gave the gift of his corneas to another who needed them. Reuben was an avid swimmer, and played water polo at Madison High School, where he graduated in 1982. He even braved the chilly waters of La Jolla’s Polar Bear Plunge as an annual tradition on January 1st. For many years he was involved in organizing and running OMBAC’s Over-the-Line tournament as the tournament treasurer. He worked at Price Club and See’s Candy, and ultimately became a Pharmacy Technician at Sav-On Drugs. In his later years, Reuben participated in AA, and became a sponsor for many people facing the challenges of alcoholism, helping them lead sober and productive lives. Every year for 11 years he hosted a Christmas Party for his diverse circle of friends. Reuben had an infectious sense of humor, always trying to put a smile on the faces of people around him, and he wasn’t beyond playing a few tricks on unsuspecting victims. He always kept a positive attitude, even when faced with major health issues. Reuben’s kind and gentle soul will be remembered with fondness and love by all who knew him. He is survived by his parents Reuben Ray Hanshew and Evelyn Mary Hanshew, his sister Mary (Dede) Chapin, her husband Michael and their daughter Dana, Reuben’s niece. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 1, 2016 at St. Brigid Catholic Church, 4735 Cass Street, San Diego.
