My fondest memory of my cousin Paul was when I was in high school.  Paul sold me his car, a 64 Oldsmobile named Belle.  It had big snow tires (that I didn't need in San Diego), only primer and ripped seat cushions.  Paul let me have it for $75.  After a paint job, new tires, seat covers and an awesome cassette sound system I had the best ride around.  I so appreciated Paul's generosity and kindness.

Another important memory was Paul being the MC at my father's 60th birthday party at the Bali Hai.  Paul just commanded the room and was so honoring of my father including a proper roasting with many hilarious stories.  

I will remember Paul for his big heart, kind eyes, faithfulness, sense of humor, and love for Belle, his sons and extended family. He was a very special human being!

Sincere condolences to Belle, Marc and Jo-El. Your husband and father, my uncle, was a remarkable man, and I will never forget the kind hospitality and encouragement he offered me when I visited as a young man many years ago. It came at a time in my life when it was just what I needed. We will all miss him.

My first memory of Paul was when he returned from Rome, newly ordained. Our extended family prepared a party. As usual, the aunts and uncles drank and sang bad harmonies while the kids played. Everyone was nervous waiting to greet the holy man trained at the Vatican. Maybe they were afraid they would have to moderate their rowdy behavior. I was standing next to my father when Paul arrived with his huge grin, “Uncle Don, how the hell are you?” What a relief! 
Paul was a frequent visitor to our dinner table, especially after the Philippines. I was too young to comprehend but recognized that the support he got from our family helped him define his life. I can only take credit for the mashed potato fights, but the family conversations were crucial to him. 
Another memory I have is when I first traveled to Spain with my university. Paul and Belle came to the airport to see me off on my big adventure. What a surprise! He knew what a transforming experience a trip to Europe would be. He made the effort to share it with me. 
I also remember the Soccer World Cup of 2010 when Spain was a contender. Paul and I corresponded regularly during the tournament. I told everyone I knew about my American cousin who was rooting for us. He shared the joy as I described the feeling of an entire country connected in victory. 
For many years I have read his blogs. I loved them all, especially the stories of his youth and our family in Massachusetts. He wrote just like he talked, informally and with charming original examples. I appreciated his efforts and his talent. 
Paul has been a huge positive influence in my life. His smile, his kindness, and his intelligence contributed to my view of the world. I admire most how he remained true to himself and his beliefs, no matter the cost.
I am thankful he lived a full life. I am deeply sorry for the absence his family faces. To honor him, I will not cry at his funeral. Paul understood the essence of joy better than anyone I have ever met.

Dear Isabel. Eva and I were greatly saddened to hear of Paul's passing. I just found out this morning from a text from church. We pray the Lord comforts you and your family abundantly, and that you will always know of the love so many of us have for you. May Paul rest in peace and glory. Love always, Eugene.
