Owen H. “Obie” Oberg, 87, died October 22, 2012 after a prolonged illness. Obie was born in Athol, Massachusetts on February 3, 1925, and entered the Naval Aviation Cadet Program in 1944. The following year he met Margaret Lenora Owens, his soul mate and wife of 67 years. In 1946, after training in torpedo bombers, the Navy sent him to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where he trained on the golf course for two and one-half years. He remained an avid golfer well into retirement. Following 2 years as a flight instructor he was deployed aboard the USS Kearsarge where he flew 70 jet fighter missions over Korea. He graduated from test pilot school in 1954 and served as a test pilot at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent, Maryland. He then received his Bachelor degree from Stanford University in 1957. He also served as Commanding Officer of Fighter Squadron 41 (VF-41) in 1962 and received the Master of Science in International Affairs from George Washington University in 1969. He was Commanding Officer of USS Kitty Hawk in 1971 and promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in 1972. His combat awards include two Legions of Merit, Bronze Star, three Air Medals, and numerous unit, service and foreign decorations. He retired from the Navy in 1977.
Obie is survived by his loving wife Marge and 4 children, 9 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. He will be sadly missed but never forgotten.
There will be a viewing for Obie at Goodbody Mortuary, 5027 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego, 92115 from 6pm to 8pm Thursday. Services for Obie will take place at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Dr., San Diego, 92122 on Friday at 11:30am.
