Born on June 3rd, 1952, in Columbus, Ohio, Melvin's journey of exploration began early in life. Raised in Cleveland, he found his way to San Diego, California, where he would call home since 1974.
Melvin's life was intertwined with the pursuit of knowledge, particularly in the realm of science. His passion for the subject ignited in childhood, blossoming into a distinguished career in Chemistry. For over three decades, he lent his expertise to the labs of the San Diego Community College District, leaving an indelible mark until his well-deserved retirement in 2017.
Beyond the laboratory, Melvin's adventurous spirit knew no bounds. He traveled the world, uncovering the mysteries of remote corners and embracing the diversity of cultures. Music was his solace, and the guitar his faithful companion. A creative chef, he delighted in crafting culinary masterpieces, nurturing bonds of love and friendship through the shared joy of a meal.
Melvin leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Kathy; his children, Rochelle and Oliver; his beloved grandsons, Jackson and Jacob; his sister, Brenda; his brother, Jerry; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his cherished parents, Harry and Lillie Clay, and his brother, Harry Jr.
Melvin’s departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him. Yet, his spirit of curiosity, his love of exploration, and his enduring kindness will forever illuminate the paths of those he touched. May his memory be a beacon of inspiration and comfort to all who mourn his loss.
