MaryJo passed away on Christmas Eve 2023. She was born in Ferdinand, Indiana to Hilbert and Rose Pund in 1935. In 1958, she was a beautiful bride at St. Ferdinand Church. She married Leon Haake, a U.S. Marine who later changed to the Navy, beginning her career as a military wife. Most of her life was spent on the west coast from Long Beach, CA, to Bremerton, WA; then permanently settling in San Diego, CA.
Being a military wife is like being the CEO of a company and MaryJo ran the company well. During a deployment, she and the other wives of the neighborhood watched over all the children.
Along with her own five kids, you never knew who would show up at the dinner table.
MaryJo was a good cook, as well as a great seamstress. Her tasty fried chicken, Mac & Cheese, and blackberry pies, with freshly picked blackberries from the shores of Bremerton, were legendary. She would get up at the crack of dawn, to get ready for the holidays and always produced a wonderful feast. She created pretty dresses, fun pajamas and sturdy school clothes, for all her children. Mary Jo was dedicated to her family and spent a lifetime taking care of one and all. MaryJo will be greatly missed.
MaryJo is preceded in death by her husband, Leon. She is survived by her children; James, Mark, Yvonne, Joyce, and Brian, along with her grandkids and great grandkids.
