Maria Luz Soriano Torres was 81 years young when she passed away quietly on the 18th of August, 2020. She was from Hagonoy Bulacan, Philippines where she met her hometown sweetheart Lamberto Reyes Torres. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Nutrition at Centro Escolar University and received her Doctor of Optometry at Manila Central University. A higher education was of great importance and was instilled to her daughters and her family. She took pride in knowing all her daughters had fulfilled her wishes by receiving their Bachelor degrees and pursued careers in the healthcare field.
Maria Luz was a wife, loving mother, grandmother, devoted Catholic, and a woman of all trades.
She was wife to Lamberto Reyes Torres where they met in her hometown. They became sweethearts and eloped in 1968. She dutifully followed in his Navy career and eventually settled in San Diego. They were married for 52 years.
Maria Luz is also survived by her three daughters Michelle, Stephanie, and Catherine where she had her own special relationship with each of them. She was always their advocate and supported them in any way they needed. She enjoyed being a grandmother and to her grandchildren was known as “Lola Ganda” to Sofia, Ella, Lauryn, Penelope, and Kailei. She was a dedicated foster mother to many children who she cared for from 1987 to 2001.
She was also a devoted Catholic where she was a parishioner at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. She was an active member to the church where she formed many cherished friendships and whom she enjoyed many religious travel adventures.
A woman of all trades, she was a builder, decorator, gardener, and a talented cook. She was creative in more ways than one and knew her way around a toolbox. She sewed the curtains but also made the rods to hang it. She made her own headboards. Her daughter once bought her a jigsaw so she can cut the wood herself instead of asking someone. Maria had a passion and love for plants and certainly had a green thumb. If you ever came to our home you could see all the beautiful plants she had grown from orchids to air plants. She had the capability to revive a plant that was almost lost. Maria is most known for being an amazing cook. All of those who had the pleasure to have her cooking, they enjoyed it tremendously from her ground turkey, shrimp lumpia to sapin sapin. Her sapin sapin was highly regarded. A secret recipe she held dearly and only shared to a select few. A labor of love to cook and eaten quickly by many. We will miss that sapin sapin.
We will miss Maria Luz immensely as she has touched many lives due to her selflessness and love. We love you, and as she always said, "When it’s your time, it’s your time."
A funeral mass for Maria Luz will be held Thursday, September 3, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 13541 Stoney Creek Road, San Diego, CA 92129. A burial will occur at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, CA 92122.
