Maria Manzi, nee Rizzo, was born in the small Italian village of Antillo, Sicily, on December 20, 1919. She came to America in 1938, and married Biagio Manzi in 1954. With her husband passing away less than six years later, Maria was left a widow with one small son and another on the way. To make ends meet, she did housecleaning, was a seamstress who took in sewing and ironing jobs, and even made clothes for others including a wedding dress. Not having finished school in Italy, she took night courses and graduated high school in San Diego, and then went on to attend cooking classes in college, which led to a successful career as a sous-chef at the Hilton Hotel—something that would be of no surprise to anyone who enjoyed her cooking. Due to complications from a surgery, she was confined to a bed in her final years, cared for by her two sons, but kept a strong, joyous and loving spirit, always with “much to be thankful for." Her Savior, whom she loved above all, called her home on November 7, 2022, at the age of 102 years, 10 months and 18 days. She is survived by her two sons, Joseph and David Manzi. Until we meet again, always in our hearts.
