Margaret Katherine Mayer was Born in Humboldt, Tennessee on December 4, 1930 to Hawley and Lula Bateman. She went to be with her Lord on June 6, 2024. She is preceded in death by her husband Leslie, son Ronald, as well as her sister Irene her brothers, Murray, Glenn, and James Bateman, her nephew John Bateman, and her niece Linda Thurman. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Margaret enjoyed many activities in her life, including her volunteer time spent with Daughters of the Nile and the Lions Club. She was an active member of the Serra Mesa Christian Fellowship Church for over 50 years, and she participated in Shriner events with her husband Leslie. She deeply appreciated her church family and enjoyed participating in all the events offered.
Margaret felt it was a privilege and God-given task to prepare meals for her family and friends, and she delighted in the opportunities she had to make her favorite foods for those she loved. She also loved to show off her home city of San Diego and had many stories to tell of her travels across the country.
After husband Leslie retired from the Navy, the three of them enjoyed taking family vacations together. They loved traveling in their RV across the US, first to Louisiana enjoying the beautiful mansions in Baton Rouge, then to Houston, TX to observe the Space Center Station, they visited relatives while in Houston. Made a stop in Oklahoma as they traveled on toward AZ, they enjoyed the majesty of the painted desert, continuing to Phoenix to visit family there, then back home to San Diego. Other places they loved traveling together were Hawaii, visiting with family on Long Island in Leslie’s home state of New York, as well as Margaret’s home state of TN for family reunions. There were trips to WA State to share Christmas’ and summer vacations with her two brothers and families in Yakima, WA.
Earlier in life, Margaret obtained a cosmetology license and was ready to embark on managing a salon when her life took an unexpected turn when her son Ronald Mayer was involved in a tragic motorcycle accident when he was 17 years of age. From that time forward she was devoted to caring for him until the day he passed away on June 12, 2023. They were a team and helped each other out in many ways. She was closely involved with the Brain Injury Foundation of which she and Leslie helped establish in San Diego. She also cared for her husband, who had Parkinson’s disease, for many years.
She is survived by cousins; Sharon (Larry) Lewis, Jeanne (Kasi) Mayer Freebody, Alan (Robin) Mayer, David (Lindsay) Bradley, Nephews; Sam {Judy) Bateman, and Ted Thurman, Nieces; RoseMarie Longmire, Glenna Gibson, Mary Engel and other nieces, great nieces, and nephews. Margaret deeply appreciated the friendship of Mathew Fuller, Cathy Stearns, Judy Tesone, and Pastor Luis and Yvonne Juarez. The loving care provided by Elizabeth (Beth) Flores from June 2023 until the day of her death is appreciated beyond measure.
A service of remembrance will be held at the Cypress View Chapel, 3952 Imperial Ave. San Diego, CA 92113 at 1:00 p.m. on June 20, 2024. Please join us after the service for a meal at the Serra Mesa Fellowship Church, 2649 Murray Ridge Rd, San Diego 92123
