Margaret Allsworth Dreher of San Diego, California passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2020 at the age of 94. She is remembered by family and friends as smart, feisty, fiercely devoted to her family and fun.
Margaret was born on January 1, 1926. She was the first baby born in San Diego that year at Mercy Hospital to Virginia Perry Allsworth and Albert Allsworth.
Margaret graduated from San Diego High School and received her master's degree in education from San Diego State in 1954. She also earned a doctorate equivalency in education.
She met the love of her life, Norman Dreher in high school and they were married following the end of World War II, where Norman served in the United States Army. Norman was a teacher and counselor at San Diego City College and San Diego Miramar College.
Margaret was an educator in San Diego for 43 years. She began her career teaching speech, drama and English at Memorial Junior High School. She then became a vice principal at Mission Bay High, San Diego High and Clairemont High.
She was an active member and officer in Soroptimist International; Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional women educators' society and a life member of the PTA and the VFW.
She is survived by her only child, Margaret Ann Smith; granddaughter Shellee Smith and her husband James Dowling; niece Virginia Ann Wick and her daughter Emily Hagins; cousins Mary Virginia Bradshaw, Natalie Schwatka, Trish Hobbs and her children.
A socially distanced memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, February 2 at 2pm outside the Chapel of the Bells, located at El Camino Mortuary in Sorrento Valley. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Margaret Dreher and Norman Dreher's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer's Association.
