Magness "Smiley" Hyles, 94, passed away on May 29, 2014.
Magness was born to the late W.J. Hyles and Lula Hughes, Oct. 25,1919, in Hico, Texas. Magness graduated from Grammar School. He was married to Carmencita B. Hyles for 18 years.
Magness served in the U.S.Marine Corps as a camp cook for 20 years. He was a World War II veteran and received numerous medals for his dedication.
Afterwards, he continued working in the Civil Service for another 20 years until his retirement in 1974.
Magness was a very supportive, caring, loving husband and father, loved nature and playing cards in the casinos.
He is survived by his seven children by marriage: Gerardo, Herbert, Archiebald, Rogelio Jr, Carmen, Elmer, and Charles Picar.
He also is survived by his granddaughter, nieces, and nephews.
A viewing will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Beardsley-Mitchell Funeral Home in Sunset Cliffs Blvd. Burial will be held at 10:30 am Thursday at Miramar National Cemetery.
