Born December 24, 1939 to Thomas “Les” and Lillian (Azevedo) Perry in San Diego, California, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many.
A 1958 graduate of Point Loma High School, he was a proud member of the Portuguese community where both his parents and in-laws served as Presidents of the Festa do Espirito Santo. Les and Lillian Perry served in 1974 followed by Joseph and Mary Rogers in 1997.
As a career fisherman, he served as the Captain of the Quo Vadis, Mary Jo and Sea Trader. Throughout his career, he formed many strong bonds within the local fishing community. He found joy in family gatherings, visiting cousins in Hanford, California, and fishing and hunting with his children and grandchildren where many lifelong memories were formed.
Not often a man of many words, when he did speak those around him would listen, as they knew that his words were never hollow. He made each and every member of his large family feel special, and if you were to ask each of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who was his favorite, each one would swear to you that it was them.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Renee (Rogers) Perry; five children, Lynee Valin (Mark), Rena Casey (Mike), Debra Clarkson (Barry), Leslie Perry Jr. (Irene), Brian Perry (Margaret); 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Always a leader and never a follower, his legacy will live on through his family.
A memorial Mass will be held at 9:00 a.m. on August 17, 2020 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 1374 Twin Peaks Road, Poway, California. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to United Portuguese S.E.S, Inc., 2818 Avenida de Portugal, San Diego, California 92106 or the Portuguese Historical Center, P.O. Box 60749, San Diego, California 92106.
