was a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, “Lalu”, and “Momma Sargent” to many. Laurie
was born on July 19th, 1964 to James and Sue Risser in San Diego, CA where she lived for the first 6 years
of her life. She then moved to Monahans, TX where she excelled in academics and found her love for
performing arts. She was involved in band, musical theater, baton twirling, and choir where she had the
honor of performing in the All-State Choir. She was even voted “Best All Around” by her high school
peers.
After high school, Laurie received a vocal scholarship to attend Texas Tech University before finishing her
bachelor degree at the University of Texas Permian Basin. After college Laurie started a job at Kent Oil
Company in Midland, TX where she met the love of her life, Rodney Sargent in 1990. Rodney and Laurie
were married on June 1st, 1991 and in typical Laurie fashion, she sang a song to Rodney on their
wedding day. Laurie started her first business, a children's clothing and furniture store “Baby Biz”, 4 years
later and only 9 months after giving birth to her first child, Ryan.
After selling Baby Biz, Laurie found her passion for mosaics and enjoyed spending her free time building
beautiful crosses, and other mosaic pieces for her friends and family. Laurie was also known for being an
avid animal lover and even had 5 dogs at one point in her life (and would’ve had 10+ if Rodney had let
her). After Laurie sold her 2nd business in 2014 she relocated to San Diego with her family. She enjoyed
spending time at Disneyland, Seaworld, and the Zoo, but one of her favorite places to be was at the
beach or anywhere near a body of water. She spent countless hours walking down the beach picking up
seashells with her daughter Daytona to use in her art projects and has a collection large enough to
challenge a Guinness World Record holder. She truly felt the most at peace when she was at the beach
with her family.
Family was everything to Laurie and her kids were her passion in life. She enjoyed being a theater mom,
“Momma Sargent”, while Ryan was in high school and served as “room mom” at Daytona’s school
throughout the years. No matter what was going on in her life you could always find her cheering on her
kids and their friends who deemed her their “second mom”. She always wanted to be the “cool mom”
who all the kids wanted to hang out with and she definitely achieved that!
Laurie had a smile that lit up the room the second she walked in and instantly turned anyone's bad day
into a good one. Her presence made everything better and she will be unbelievably missed.
She is preceded in death by her father, James Risser, and grandparents, Marvin and Beulah Goodall.
She is survived by her mother, Sue Kelley (Joe), husband Rodney Sargent, and children, Ryan, Daytona,
Christopher, and Kendale, 4 grandchildren, her brother Jimmy Nemecheck, and sister Amber Risser.
A Funeral Service with Visitation to follow will be held for Laurie on Saturday, March 12, 2022 from 4:00
PM to 7:00 PM at El Camino Memorial Chapel, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd, San Diego, CA 92121
