Kody’s Story-
Kody spent his early childhood in the Lake Arrowhead mountains in Southern California. During those years he lived near both sets of grandparents, establishing a strong family bond and a legacy of faith in Christ. He was later baptized by his grandpa, along with his siblings in Aspen.
At an early age Kody developed his love for sports, not only watching The Cowboys, but also watching his dad and grandpa play basketball together. This began a longstanding family competition that still exists today. His relationships with his family were very close knit, extending to his cousins, aunts and uncles. However, the next generation with his son, nieces and nephews have most recently stolen his heart.
Kody’s love of adventure and exploration began in the wooded backyard of his moms parents house, where Nana would take him exploring for secret hiding places. An old boat had been installed in the ground to become his playhouse. Thus beginning his love of pirates and the hunt for treasure that continued throughout his life. His talent of art and creativity began by sitting on his Papa’s lap as he would draw numerous pictures for Kody of his favorite cartoon characters, cars, trains and airplanes.
When Kody was two, Amanda became a special part of his life, setting the scene for when she would later become one of his “sisters” moving in, and becoming part of the family in Aspen.
In 1992 Kody became a big brother to his little sister Andree. He loved her very much and was always such a sweet brother to her, promising to protect her always. He was very happy when she married someone who treated her right and would be able to protect her in his absence. In 1993 the family left California, and moved to Texas for a brief 5 months where they learned they were mountain people and quickly fled to Colorado.
Kody spent the rest of his childhood years in Aspen where he loved exploring the outdoors, snowboarding, skateboarding, dirt biking, and camping. Kody became a big brother again as he welcomed 3 more brothers, Casey in 1995, Jordan in 1999, and Brady in 2002. His younger siblings all looked up to him in everything he did and loved him beyond words. Although they could drive him crazy, he would have done anything for them. They all agree that Kody was their number one fan. He was very encouraging and supported them in everything they did, always hoping they would find joy in chasing their dreams as he did. Kody was very thoughtful and had a grateful and generous heart. He had a great sense of humor and didn’t take life too seriously, and was always playful and goofy, allowing the simple things in life to bring him joy and happiness. He had a wonderful laugh, smile, and sense of charm. Kody never knew a stranger and considered everyone his friend.
Kody was a natural athlete, able to try anything and pick it up quickly. He played baseball, football, and basketball, but quickly came to find that his love for hockey trumped them all. Kody became a goalie at the Peewee level and found his niche. He was a very confident goalie with a bit of an attitude. He had fun harassing the other team. Kody was fortunate to be one of 6 players who later became known as “the band of brothers” in their senior year. These 6 seniors played together from mites through their years at Aspen High School. Although this was the core group, Kody considered the rest of his teammates brothers as well. They all grew up together and were very close. This team worked hard winning a lot throughout the years but the most memorable and recognizable achievement was winning the 2007 5A Colorado High School Hockey State Championship in their final season. The first and only team to ever win this title on the Western Slope. It was a 1-0 final score, shut out! For a goalie, that is a big deal! Maybe the first time ever that Kody did not let in his infamous first goal. Kody was awarded the MVP of this state tournament.
Kody’s creativity found its match in music and a new passion began. He would spend hours creating songs, and found freedom and joy in it, which led him to acquire his Bachelor’s of Science in Recording Arts degree from Full Sail University in Winter Park, Fl. He was a Producer/Engineer/DJ and engineered and produced music for over 10 years professionally. Throughout the last decade Kody toured as a live dj, worked as a live sound engineer for a few years and worked with an extensive list of bands/artists. He has produced and engineered multiple albums of his own, as well as countless collaboration projects. He created an all-in-one studio concept called the Media Mrkt. His accomplishments can be read in more detail on his website.Themediamrkt.com
Kody bounced back and forth between Aspen and Denver then finally in August 2017 landed in a new land, his city, San Diego. He loved the beach and the weather here and the fact that there was no snow. If you had visited him, he would have loved to show you all of his favorite things: sunset cliffs, boating with friends, and of course anything on the beach. You would have had a special invite to one of his performances at PB Avenue, The Tipsy Crow, THC, Hard Rock, or Omnia nightclub. Kody enjoyed watching sunsets, and exploring the pirate ship, where he would hang out on his lunch breaks. The places he insisted on included coffee at Brick and Bell, tacos at Oscars and Bahia Don Bravo, burgers at Rocky’s, El Pescadors and Childrens Pool Beach, where the seals and sea lions hang out in La Jolla. While just over the border he’d found his happy, special place in Rosarito and loved to visit there as often as possible. He would’ve introduced you to his friends, his loves, and the places he worked, The Embassy Suites Downtown, Pak Mail, LaValencia and Estancia in La Jolla, and Belmont Park in Mission Bay. He really settled into life here and found his place in the world. Kody was so excited when his little brother Jordan decided to move close by, to attend school. He was happy to have a buddy to learn to surf with. Turns out he would be introducing Jordan to someone very special, in 2021. When Kody welcomed a new life into the world, his son, Julian…
Kody had a gentle and kind spirit, which became even more evident in his relationship with Julian. He was a very loving and patient dad, enjoying his new role and spending time with his son. Kody began to teach “JuJu bean” his favorite things, like dancing, music and controlling his soundboards, playing mini hockey and learning to draw as Papa taught him.
Kody was a pioneer, brave and adventurous, searching for life’s treasure. Eager to explore and find new territory, he continued blazing the trail for his younger siblings, always teaching and encouraging them along the way. He had incredible perseverance pushing through life’s storms for the sake of what he could find on the other side. Always finding the risks worth the potential rewards. He was very innovative, constantly thinking of new inventions and ideas, testing the limits and pushing creativity to make something the world has never seen. From the mountains of Aspen to the sea in San Diego, the highs and the lows, Kody persevered and never gave up. He might have let in that early goal but he would always put it behind him and buckle down for what was next.
So here you are Kode, 1st again, exploring the new land before we follow you into it. We saw the sign the night after you left. That giant rainbow that covered our town was God’s promise across the sky. We now know that you have finally found your treasure. “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field…” Matt. 13:44
We can’t wait to see you there and watch the rest of God’s plans for you unfold into eternity. This is just the beginning…there we will really get to live…and “oh to live will be an awfully big adventure.”
The treasures that Kody has now left behind, remain special gifts for each one of us to cherish. Leaving his love and his future with Kayla and Julian Grant Saycocie, his past and his memories with his dear family and friends, and his heart with Mina Lally.
Thank you all for being a special part of his life and allowing him to be part of yours.
