Kenneth James Whalen January 5th, 1966 – September 28th, 2014 Kenneth James Whalen traveled the world for business, pleasure, adventure, and sheer curiosity – but he always came home to his native San Diego. Born and raised in the Bay Park neighborhood, Ken spent his youth playing soccer and surfing the coasts of California and Baja. A precocious youth, his mother often joked that he never played with toys, choosing instead to build things with tools. Ever industrious, he began working at age eleven and never stopped. Ken graduated from Clairemont High School and University of San Diego. His intellect, work ethic, bilingual skills and entrepreneurial spirit led him to create a furniture business that began with individual sales at the weekly Kobey’s Swap Meet and grew to become a successful international business. Ken was an exemplary leader, an astute businessman and a true gentleman. Ken married the love of his life. She helped him grow the business and a family of three beautiful children. In addition to being a dedicated husband and father, Ken’s personal accomplishments are many. He created a successful business, supported a wide variety of charitable organizations in meaningful ways, and finished numerous marathons and triathlons across the country. Ken made time for his extended family, and remained a loyal friend to so many of his boyhood and college friends and neighbors. Ken’s charm and the joy he found in daily life drew people to him from all walks of life. He was well known for his passion for surfing, cycling, snowboarding, running, fishing, and opening his home for others to gather. Ken inspired many people to reach higher, do more, and to bring about positive change in the world. His compassion for others moved all who knew him, particularly his efforts in support of the Challenged Athletes Foundation. He challenged and encouraged all to pursue their dreams. For these, and many other reasons, he will be missed deeply. Ken passed away from complications of a massive stroke on September 28, 2014. He is survived by his beloved wife and children, parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Ken’s honor be made to the Challenged Athletes Foundation. www.challengedathletes.org/kenwhalen. A traditional surfers’ paddle out ceremony followed by a private Celebration of Life Service will be held for family and close friends.
