Julia Lee Haynes Wilson, was born in Texas on April 22, 1926, to Lewis and Mary Haynes Lampkins. Julia was adopted and raised at an early age, by her maternal uncle and aunt, Rev. Benjamin and Mrs. Virginia Haynes of Shreveport, Louisiana. Julia grew up in Shreveport, where she received her formal education, graduating from Central High School. She was preceded in death by her two brothers Lewis Lampkins, Benjamin Lampkins and three sisters Vera Mae Davis, Lois Stinnett, and Joyce Player.
Julia married William T. McGee Jr. and moved to San Diego, California. To this union were born six children, James C. McGee, William T. McGee, II, Stephen McGee, and Julia L. Denét, who preceded her in death and Virginia M. Thompson, and Bennie J. Madison.
Julia met and married Leon J. Wilson in San Diego, California and they have been a team for nearly 57 years. Leon credits Julia with, “making my life worth living”. He stayed by her side every day for the past six months giving her “pecks” on her cheek as she smiled her affectionate smile.
Julia worked for Convair Industries during the war, while studying cosmetology, and was a licensed cosmetologist in San Diego for over 50 years. She owned her own hair salon for many years and taught at the Deloux School of Cosmetology in San Diego. She was a very active member of the Alpha Chi Pi Omega Sorority & Fraternity incorporated, Xi Eta Chapter. She served in many offices of her chapter including President.
Julia has been a devoted, active and faithful member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church for over 70 years until her health began to fail. She served as a member of the church’s nominating committee, the United Methodist Women, the church Choir, and she and Leon were faithful members of the Monday prayer group and the Wednesday morning bible study group.
Julia has always been known as a very caring, sweet person who always put others first. Her children and grandchildren called her “the nicest woman on earth”. She never found fault but always good in everyone. She was called “mom” and “grandma” by many young people who always seemed to gravitate toward her soft words and acts of kindness.
Julia leaves to mourn her passing, three sisters, Joanne Lampkins, Helen Beroit and Charlesetta Lampkins. Two children, Virginia McGee-Thompson and Bennie J. Madison. Ten grandchildren, Valerie McGee-Harris, Rhonda Denét-Weems, Anthony McGee, Edward R. Denét III, Tracy E. Dell, Renza McGee, Benjamin Madison, Candice Kelley and William T. McGee III, Gregory Owens, Ten great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives, friends and associates. Julia will be missed by family and all that knew and loved her.
