Joyce Rebecca Walker

Joyce Rebecca Severson Walker, 82 years old, resident of San Diego for 62 years, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2018 at her home in San Diego, California.

Joyce was born Dec 27, 1935 in Brigham City, Utah. She was raised by Helen and Glen Severson in Fielding, Utah where she graduated from Bear River High School. In December of 1953 She married Verl C Walker, her high school sweetheart and worked as a secretary at Utah State University where her husband attended. After Verl’s graduation from USU, the couple moved to San Diego.

During the early years of their marriage and after their first two boys were born, Joyce suffered from a debilitating virus which left her as a paraplegic. Despite her paralysis, she gave birth to five more children.

Undaunted by her wheel chair she lived a rich full life and along with her husband Verl, raised their seven children. Her greatest joy was being with her children, her 48 grandchildren and her 51 great grandchildren. Her legacy of love for her posterity was profound and noticed by all who knew her.

Throughout her life her secretarial skills provided her with considerable volunteer opportunities to do Family History research and help others type their family history records.

Along with her husband, Joyce served a two year Family History mission for her church as well as a eighteen month proselyting mission to Atlanta, GA. Her interests included, oil painting, ceramics, quilting and needlework. She made over 70 customized counted cross-stitch Christmas stockings for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as designed and made over countless quilts that are treasured by her posterity. Joyce also hand made over 100 baby quilts that were donated to the Gently Hugged Charitable organization.

Joyce is well known by her family, neighbors and friends for her spunky sense of humor, open and generous heart, and her compassion and caring for others.
