Joseph (Josey) Silva February 6, 1924 – October 18, 2017 San Diego Josey Silva, a resident of Point Loma and Ocean Beach since 1929, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on October 18, 2017 at the age of 93. Josey was born in Gloucester, MA on February 6, 1924 to John and Mary (DaRosa) Silva; 4th oldest of 9 children. The family moved from Gloucester to Point Loma in 1929 like many other Portuguese families to continue commercial tuna fishing. Josey attended Point Loma High School until he began fishing with his father on the Mary V in 1938 and was found to be a natural fisherman. He continued to commercial tuna fish for 50 years until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the American Tunaboat Association, Captain and Owner of three fishing vessels; Star of the Sea, Clipperton and JoAnn. He was kind, generous, strong and a mentor who helped many young men by taking them fishing with him. Josey was a true-blue Charger fan and continued to cheer them on even after the Chargers left San Diego. Josey was an avid billiard pool player and continued to play in tournaments at Lucy’s Tavern (Ocean Beach) up until a couple months before his death. Josey was married to Sally (Davis) for 35 years until her death in 1984. Josey married Linda following Sally’s passing. They spent 32 years together. Josey was preceded in death by his son, Joe (Dodo), wife, Sally (Davis), seven siblings Elvira, Virginia, Mary, John (Baldy), Anthony, Manuel (Huey), and Filomena (Minnie). Josey is survived by his wife, Linda, daughters JoAnn, Jessica (Ernie Wright II), Jackie (Paul Freeman), and Lisa (Moore), six grandchildren Joey Silva, Josh Silva, Justin Silva, Sterling Gietzen, Sally Gietzen and Amanda Reed, three great grandchildren, sister Roslin Engleman (Silva), niece Louise Coon (Francisco) and many other nieces and nephews. He taught us how to love unconditionally. His smile and jokes were present up until the end of his life. He will be greatly missed. A memorial will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church on Saturday, October 28th at 10 a.m. followed by a reception at 11 a.m. Reception details available at the memorial.
