Born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 1, 1945 to Henry and Doris (Paradis) McMahon, Joe was the eldest of six siblings. He grew up in Somerville, Arlington and Newton, and graduated with honors from Boston College High School. As a National Merit Scholar, he attended Boston College, and later, earned a Masters degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Although his education was in mathematics, Joe’s special passion for architecture and building drew him to a career in real estate development, work in which he was inspired by a constant search for excellence. As an executive for the Beacon Construction Company in Boston, Joe supervised the building of complex urban infrastructure projects including hospitals and, most notably, the renewal of Rowes Wharf in 1987.
An avid hockey player in his youth, Joe remained a life-long fan of Boston sports teams. But in later years, seeking a milder climate, he retired in La Jolla, where his lifelong passion for golf could be fully enjoyed. It was there that he met Rosalind Dietrich, with whom he happily spent his final years.
Joe is survived by his five siblings : Brian (living in Burlington, Massachusetts) Dick (Stow, Massachusetts), Marie (Montpellier, France), Tom (Los Angeles) and Elise (Beverly, Massachusetts), and by his five nephews and nieces. His family will greatly miss his charismatic nature, his lively wit, and his boundless curiosity.
The family will celebrate his life on August 10, 2023 in Boston.
