Joseph was born in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada. His parents were the Honorable Judge Joseph Lawrence Ryan and Lady Annie Ryan.
Joseph pursued a career in medicine as a general surgeon for many years. However, Joseph and Eulalia did not enjoy the Canadian winters; thus, they relocated their growing family to the beautiful state of California, U.S.A. Eventually, "home" became beautiful, sunny San Diego, specifically, Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma.
Joseph left the medical field of general surgery and re-entered as an addictionologist where, as a medical doctor, he specialized in providing medical care for those looking to overcome substance abuse disorders. His dedication to providing medical care to alcoholics became legendary because of his knowledge of the disease and his undying compassion to those suffering from alcoholism. Joseph died with 55 years of continuous sobriety.
Joseph loved his Catholic faith. Joseph's faith in Jesus grew through his love of the Mass, praying the Holy Rosary, dedication to the Divine Mercy and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Joseph loved Jesus. His favorite little prayer was "Jesus, I trust in You." Joseph and Eulalia made time to visit many Catholic shrines and visited the Holy Land.
Joseph chose to love and care for 4 generations of family throughout his 96 years of life. He was a dedicated son to his own parents while treasuring his 3 brothers: John Ryan, Charles Ryan, and John Lunney. Joseph adored his sisters, Mary Ryan Burns and Sheila Ryan Harper. Joseph was a most wonderful Dad to his eight children. He became "Papa" upon the arrival of the first grandchild 37 years ago. He loved to hug and kiss all 23 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren!
Joseph was genuinely interested in all who crossed his path and truly wanted the best in life for everyone. He liked knowing that he was going to a place that no one could adequately describe. He loved living life and he left knowing that as much good as he did here, he could do so much more from heaven!
