Janice Margaret Rashid

Born in Lower Hutt, New Zealand on April 18, 1942 to Donald and Margaret Campbell, Jan immigrated with her parents to the United States in 1956. They first lived in Los Angeles, where Jan attended Fairfax High School. From Los Angeles they settled in Berkeley, California where she attended the University of California and studied Zoology.

It was there she met her beloved husband, Joseph, who was a foreign student, at an International House dance. They married in August 1960 and four years later moved to establish residence in La Jolla after Joe completed his PhD studies at UC Berkeley. For 59 years Jan devoted her life to raising a family and supporting her husband’s career. They traveled the world together and had particular fondness for Paris and Provence where Jan’s French language skills were put to the test.

Jan was a gifted, award-wining quilt artist whose work was featured in Contemporary Quilting by Cindy Walter and Stevii Graves, Wine Country Living (June 2003), and Wine Country Quilts by Cyndy Lyle Rymer and Jennifer Rounds. Her quilt, Pinot Noir, was featured on the cover of the American Quilt Society 1994 engagement calendar.

Jan was known for her elegance, her kind and gentle spirit, and her love of literature, culture and art. Museums throughout the world were her playground and she treasured the time she spent in them with her friends and family. She leaves behind her husband and love of her life, Joe; her children Laila (Jeff Grogger), Mark (Nancy Rashid) and Anissa (Stephen Shea); and five grandsons Miles Grogger, Luke, Gavin and AJ Rashid, and Rowan Shea.
