Upon graduating from high school, James enlisted in the Army National Guard. After his honorable discharge, he enlisted in the Navy. James proudly served in the Navy for 20 years and received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Good Conduct Third Award.
During his military service, he obtained his Bachelor of General Studies from Chaminade University of Honolulu and his Masters of Business Administration in Accounting from National University. After his military retirement, he was an Accountant.
While stationed in Taipei, Taiwan, he met the love of his life, Gen-Jung, and was married in 1960. James truly cherished his wife everyday of his life. Surviving in addition to his wife Gen-Jung Trout are his daughter Beverly Trout, and his three sons, Mark, James, and Robert Trout. His 12 Grandchildren are Jacqueline Mary, John Wheeler, Andrew Wheeler, Kyle Trout, Jenna Trout, Bridget Trout, Regina Trout, Nicolette Trout, James Gaius Trout, Noelle Trout, Andie Trout, and Megean McBride. His 2 great grandchildren are Olivia-Mei King-McBride and Violet Sturgis. He is also survived by his sister Marilyn Faye Griswold, and brother, Dolan Trout.
