Dear Karen, Glenn, David and Lance: I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your father. Your dad was an amazing man. I first met Jim in 1957. My dad, Manuel Robles, was already an employee at David Produce Company. As a freshman in high school, I was always impressed with men who displayed leadership qualities and lead by example. Jim Hom was exactly that person.
His instructions were simple and clear.
I remember him being well respected and connected to the larger community of San Diego. 
One day I remember he called me to the office and introduced me to Archie Moore,
a boxing legend. Jim’s instructions to me was to follow Mr. Moore and allow him to select any items he wanted and place them in his vehicle.
I remember being invited to two Ram football games in LA and driving to Long Beach with Jim, Tom and Albert. There all the Hom brothers gathered for a pre-game dinner and then drove to the LA Coliseum for the game.
Great, great memories of one of the greatest individuals I have ever met.
As we get older, age 82 years old, we look back to life experiences and remember the good and special times.
Jim Hom is by far one of the most special and good memories of my life.
May Jim rest in peace and may he enjoy the company of all his family and friends that have gone before him.

I am so sorry to hear Uncle James pass away. I really miss your parents. They are very nice. When they came visiting us in Vancouver, I then found out my grandmother and your grandfather are sister and brother. Unfortunately we only met at the restaurant for a period of time. Times fly by, it is now only in my memories.

Our thoughts and prayers got out to you for comfort and peace during this time. I know it’s tough when we loose a parent, but we have hope to see them again!

I remember Uncle Jim as the number one son and head of the family. I worked at David Produce when I was young and he told me to do a good job and to work hard. During our many Hom get-togethers (restaurants, Thanksgiving or Christmas at a home, Hom vacations at Rancho Veronica or a Mexican cruise, or seeing family on weekends) he would always ask how I was doing and what I plan to do in the future. Family, working hard,  and being proud of our heritage was important to Uncle.

Getting out on a daily basis was also important. As a small kid, I would be in awe at how far he could run. First he ran, then he walked as he got older. He kept fit and took care of himself. He also went fishing with his brothers, on occasion, at Harbor Island. They would make a day of it while we caught crabs on the rocks nearby. Family and fresh air at the same time. A good day!

I will remember Uncle Jim fondly and with love. His presence will be missed.

My sincerest apology in my late note to reply in extending my deep sincere condolences to all of you and the family.

I received an email from Andre after arriving to the main island from the far reaches of the outer islands in the Marshall Island archipelago were there is almost no means of communication.   My heartfelt sorrow has never been felt as I did the day I read Andre's email of the news.  I had planned to come to San Diego, however the travel ban and restriction imposed by my government preventing travel due to COVID 19.   

My  greatest moments, memories and learning experiences were interwoven with kindness and dignified respectability through Mr. Hom who was a great friend and legend in his time.

I will forever be indebted  to this incredible personality.   I will always forever remember him as my enduring and eternal beloved respectful friend and mentor.  I will miss dearly.

I would like to express our deepest condolence to your family due to the recent passing of your father. My wife and I have known Glenn and his family for over 34 years in San Diego as our neighbors. We have also met and known Glenn's parents, brothers, and sister over many years. They are very hard-working, honest, friendly, helpful, responsible, and ethical people. 

The last time I met and spoke to Glenn's father was at the Chinese Lunar New Year 2020 Celebration at the University of California, San Diego. Your Father and Mother have provided excellent guidance and wisdom in raising your four children into professional people. In addition to raising his immediate family, he took on the responsibility earlier of raising his eight younger brothers and three younger sisters. 

In closing, Mr. James Eric Hom was an excellent role model to his family members and to his community.

Dear Lance, Glenn, David, and Karen,

Coming at the tail end of the cousins, I didn’t get to have the full David Produce experience, but I vividly remember my frequent visits down there with my dad.  Uncle Jim always had a roll of Lifesavers in his desk that he’d share with me, as he checked in to make sure that I was being good and trying my hardest in school.

My dad and I would also go to the house to watch various games on the weekend, often arriving just as Uncle returned from his frequent jogs.  I particularly remember him getting really excited to see John Lee kicking for UCLA in the early ‘80s  :-)

We will all miss him and our time together, but we can also take comfort in knowing that once again he is with Auntie.

My deepest condolences on the passing of Uncle Jim.
It would be impossible to remember all of the important lessons and memorable experiences involving Uncle Jim.
Foremost, Uncle Jim taught us young Hom boys the importance of an earnest handshake, good eye contact, and a disarming smile.  The lucky few of us were taught his "secret" handshake.  His other lasting impression was the experience we gained by his  having us make speeches at the Hom family gatherings, especially at the Mother's Day dinners.
The summer we spent working at David Produce was an all-important one.  One day, Uncle Jim sat Nate, and Lance and I down in his office, gave each of us a piece of beef jerky and proceeded to tell us about our grandfather. He told us about how hard he worked, the obstacles he dealt with daily, and reminded us of the importance of family.
Uncle Jim's  joie de vivre was a good example for us to follow, especially the need to get out and exercise.
Uncle Jim will be missed. but his legacy of the Hom family will endure.

Karen, Glen, David and Lance - my deepest condolences to you and your families.   I hope you will find great comfort knowing your wonderful dad is with your sweet mom again.  

I have such fond memories of dear Uncle James.   He was always  smartly dressed and dapper.   As a little girl, I was struck by his kindness.   I recall his visits to our family home on "C" street included giving me some sort of treat, sometimes even a quarter (in the good old days that was a lot of money to a kid).   I loved going for visits to David Produce where Uncle Jim gathered up produce for me and my dad to take home, along with another favorite treat - a small bag of pumpkin seeds kept in his office.   While we were out on family drives, I often recall seeing Uncle jogging through the neighborhood.  He was the picture of good heath and always had a bright smile.   I loved our family's spontaneous visits to Uncle Jim and Aunt Evelyn's house.   I fondly recall the grown ups talking in the family room and the kids sitting in the kitchen eating cookies and pink punch Auntie always had ready for company.   Perhaps one of my greatest memories of Uncle James is how incredibly proud he was was to be the eldest, number one child in our great big wonderful Hom family.    We'll miss him dearly.

An adventure seeker, a legend, and the BOSS. You were the best story teller of our childhood. We really looked up to you as a leader for our family. We admire how you never really told people what to do, but you led by example. 

You always knew how to dress the part. Always looking sharp. 
 
Spearheading the family as the oldest brother to all your siblings and leading a successful business David’s Produce, you taught us that with hard work and perseverance, you can get anything done. 

We miss playing pool and going on long walks with you. We will cherish all the big Chinese feasts we had with you and will never forget all the times you tried to get us to eat the fish eye ball. Thank you for all the times you secretly gave us money when our parents weren’t looking.

He was distinguished, respected and dignified. He was dearly beloved by all who know him and now he is dearly missed.

It has been my pleasure to know Mr. James Hom and his family for over half a century.  I met Mr. Hom through their son David when David and I were students at Wilson Junior High School in San Diego.  Mr. and Mrs. Hom always made me feel welcome when I visited them, and they treated me as part of their family.   

Mr. Hom often told me to keep life simple, focus on the important things in life such as family and friends, and eliminate the headaches.  His advice has served me well over the many decades that I knew him and his family.  He will be missed.  

Dear Uncle Jim,
You have left us with so many wonderful memories, you will be sorely missed. Growing up, I spent most of my weekends running between the Produce, Far East and Farmer’s. My cousins surely share in all those times.  My dad loved seeing everybody at each location and hanging out with his brothers .
I spent some quality time with you when Uncle Paul was in the hospital and you flew up to see him.  You were always there for your family. We knew what it meant to be a Hom. Everyone has been proud to be in this family.
All of our super loud and fun family gatherings will always be fondly remembered.
So, although we are saddened by your passing, I take comfort that you are with my dad and other beloved brothers and sister.

I am so sorry about the passing of your father.  Your dad was a special guy!  He was the pillar of the Hom family after our father passed away during World War II.  At that time, Jim was in the U.S. Army Air Corps.  Because food supply was critical to the war effort, Jim was allowed to return home to take over the responsibilities of running  David Produce Company.  He did very well.  He built David Produce to be the largest produce firm in San Diego, mainly through his hard work and the trust that people had in him
Personally, I consider your dad as my best friend. He was best man at my wedding to Dorothy and best man again when I was widowed and married  Loretta.
Please take comfort that your dad is now with your wonderful mother Evelyn and the siblings who went before him.  They are in the good hands of our Heavenly Father.

I am very sorry for your loss.  Uncle James was a wonderful individual. It was he who gave me my very first job.  As a teenager, I assisted Mr. Wadlow and Miss Ruth in the David Produce office; answering phones and working with the incoming orders. Growing up, Uncle James always exemplified grace, hard work and honor.  He will be missed.  I have so many fond  childhood memories of visiting your warm  home.  I shall cherish those Sundays. Dear Karen and Family,
It is so difficult to lose a parent no matter how old you are.  Even though you are grieving for the loss of your father, I believe you know that James Eric Hom lived a long and fruitful life, blessed by those around him.
After James' wife Evelyn passed away, daughter Karen moved in with her dad and took such good care of him, cooking his meals and catering to him.  Mr. Hom and Karen were often going to Scripps Ranch for a walk or out to lunch or dinner, which Mr. Hom loved--especially to one of his favorite Chinese restaurants.
Mr. Hom, in these last years, kept up with his daily exercise and in reading the latest news.  He was a vibrant, active man who enjoyed life to its fullest.
Now, as we say goodbye to James Hom, we remember him as a dedicated husband and father, a hard worker and a generous man.   Both Mr. and Mrs. Hom were active in their community and inspirational and generous in bringing pandas to the San Diego Zoo.  
May the memory of James Hom serve us all as a blessing.  May he 
Rest in the Peace he so well deserves.

My favorite memory of Uncle James took place almost 27-28 years ago!

I was working Downtown SD, awaiting to start a Police Academy.  I was earning less than $10/ hour at a warehouse/ loading dock.

I bumped into Uncle James, he was still the “Big Kahuna” at David Produce.

He told me if things didn’t work with the Police Department, he would be honored to hire me and have me work at David Produce!

I was surprised and flattered by his interest, respect and generosity.  He was a good Man.

Dearest Karen, Glenn, David and Lance and all the grandchildren ... please know that we are lifting you all up so high in comfort and peace during this most difficult of times.    I last saw Uncle Jimmy at my father's 93 rd birthday dinner at Jasmine Restaurant almost a year ago, right before the whole Covid-19 took over the world.  He was dressed sharp as always, asking how we all were doing and always interested in what was the latest, always had a smile.  I can never eat David & Sons Pumpkins seeds without thinking of your dad … he always had a box them in his office at the Produce and I felt so special when he would tell me to get a bag to enjoy.  He represented our family as the Number One son  in an unforgettable way, his leadership shining upon all of us.  I will miss him.  May the Angels bless you with comfort and heal your hearts and may your tears be of joyful memories that you will always have of he and your dear mother, Aunty Evelyn.
