Harry Zavos, 84, died on May 25, in his new home in Encinitas surrounded by his family. Born January 6, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan, Harry lived the American dream. Raised by Greek immigrants, Harry earned a BA in Philosophy from Wayne State University, a PhD in speech communication from the University of Iowa, and a JD from Loyola Law School. He was an associate professor at Cal State LA, practiced law for a few years, and ultimately joined the faculty at Loyola Law School, where he taught for over 30 years. In retirement, Harry took on a new role as an activist in Glendale city politics. He co-founded the Glendale Coalition for Better Government, and it was only last year that Harry was standing in court litigating with the city. In January, the Coalition won that case and the city was ordered to repay $58 million in misused water charges. Harry will be deeply missed. He was intensely curious, loved a good argument (regardless of whether the issue was profound or mundane), and enjoyed jokes and teasing his loved ones. He enjoyed people’s company, and was a trusted source of advice and counsel. He is survived by his son Nicholas (Charlotte); his grandchildren Madeleine, Henry, and James; his sister Annie (Panos) Pentheroudakis, nephews Phillip Giannikas and Manoli (Nicole) Pentheroudakis, niece Eleni (Giuseppe) Ammirati, and Grandnieces and nephews Emanuele, Chiara, Anna, Nicolas, and Sasha. Harry was predeceased by his parents Nicholas and Helen, and by his grandson Owen. Memorial donations in Harry's name may be made to the Glendale Coalition for Better Government P.O. Box 10083 Glendale, CA. 91209-0083.
