Gussie M. Williams, 6th child and last survivor of 13 children born to Will and Pearl Combs, affectionately known as “Gus Gus” or “Aunt Gussie” was born October 24, 1917 in Lonoke, Arkansas, passed away October 7, 2013 after a long convalescence. She moved to San Diego, California in 1944.
She loved to help others by giving food, money, or whatever their needs were. She was always willing to help. Her favorite foods were baked chicken with stuffing, broccoli, carrots, cranberry sauce, fruit punch, and pineapple upside down cake. Her late husband, Henry A. Williams also enjoyed cooking and gardening also. They grew roses of many different colors along with other flowers and plants. Their yard was one of the most, well-kept and a jewel in the neighborhood while her husband was alive.
After moving to San Diego she worked as a caregiver and personal assistant for the Emerson's, Child's, and Behner's; to them she was known as "Gus Gus". They all loved her dearly.
Gussie was very active in her church as Superintendent of the Sunday School at New Corinthian Baptist Church. She built the Sunday School by picking as many children as possible and taking them to Sunday School and other activities. She would often take them out to eat or entertain them in her home. On January 7, 1968 she joined Bethel Baptist Church of San Diego, California on her Christian experience. She was active in the Willing Workers Missions Ministry and Class #14 of the Sunday School Ministry. She was also an active member of the United Democratic Organization of San Diego and the City Wide Prayer Band.
Although Gussie had one daughter, Doris J. McKinney, she was a loving “mother” to many. She was a loving, aunt, friend, and grandmother who had five grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, 15 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. Gussie's warm and gentle spirit touched everyone who had the privilege to know her. To know her was to love her because she was a bundle of joy and love to all.
