As children of a U.S. Navy radioman, Gloria and her 2 younger brothers Del and George Phillips traveled from coast to coast living for a time in Panama settling in San Diego in 1935. She graduated from Hoover High School with honors and then attended San Diego State College where she joined Phi Sigma Nu which became Pi Beta Phi Sorority of which she was a life-time member.
Gloria married Kramer “Bud” Rorig in 1943, an Army pilot shot down over North Africa 3 months later. Gloria took a job as a bank teller. In 1945, Gloria married Lt. James Walters a U.S. Navy Pilot. Gloria and James had 2 daughters, Diane and Nancy Walters. James died in 1951 leaving Gloria a widow.
Gloria subsequently married and had a son, Richard Phillips, who predeceased her in 1996. Gloria worked as a lending officer at Bank of America for many years. She retired in 1977. After retiring from the bank, Gloria worked in real estate and jewelry sales until 1981. Gloria died peacefully at home on September 20, 2021 at the age of 99.
Gloria is survived by her daughters Diane Walters Francis, Nancy Walters, her grandchildren Eileen Francis Petersen, Colleen Francis and Ricky Phillips and her great-grandchildren Soren and Saoirse Petersen. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Jackie Phillips, nephews Stephen, Gary, Kevin and Mike Phillips and niece Christine Phillips Bashforth.
