It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Franklin Sigmund Glanz, MD, of San Diego, CA. Dr. Glanz was called to heaven on November 13th, 2023 at the age of 95. Surrounded by loved ones and a pillar of the Chula Vista community, Dr, Glanz has left a distinguished legacy of contributions to the medical field, his community and through his beloved family.
Born in Cleveland Ohio, Dr. Glanz was a proud alumnus of The Ohio State University, served in the US Air Force and then embarked on his career as a Physician, attending Midwestern University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine for his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and received his medical degree (MD) from the University of California, Irvine. It was in Chicago that Franklin met the love of his life and beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Shirley Glanz. Upon graduation from Medical School, he and his wife moved to the sunny state of California where Dr. Glanz began his distinguished career and he and his wife Shirley welcomed four sons. Dr. Glanz quickly established a thriving Medical Practice in Paradise Hills, CA and also became an established sports medicine physician for local High Schools and Southwestern College, caring for his community as well as many notable athletes. Dr. Glanz became President of the San Diego County Medical Society and served on several committees for the California Medical Association, contributing to key legislation such as the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act of 1975. He was recognized as one of San Diego’s “best dressed” men in 1971 and as “Physician of the Year” in San Diego in 1996. In addition, Dr. Glanz served as the Medical Director of the Shriners for many years, contributing countless hours in support of the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Dr. Glanz will forever be remembered as an “iconic physician” for the County of San Diego.
Dr. Glanz was loved by many and cherished by his family. He will be remembered for many things, including professional contributions, his infectious sense of humor and his deep love for his family. He is survived by his devoted wife Shirley, his sons, Vance (Lindy) Glanz, Todd (Irma) Glanz, Darren Glanz, and Terry (Diana) Glanz as well as eight grandchildren. A private family service for Dr. Glanz will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023 at Cypress View Mausoleum, 3953 Imperial Ave, at S. 40th St., San Diego, CA, 92113.
