It is with great sorrow that the family of Frank G. Flanders announces his passing on Sunday, August 14, 2022 after a brief illness. He was a long-time resident of Lemon Grove, a parishioner at Santa Sophia Catholic Church, a loving husband, father and grandfather, a good friend, a good neighbor, and a sympathetic champion of people who are less fortunate.
Frank was born in San Diego, at Balboa Hospital, on January 26, 1946, to George and Maria (Vomero) Flanders in San Diego. He was a proud graduate of St. Augustine High School in 1964 and studied at Mesa College. Frank was a Vietnam veteran with the 25th Infantry Division. He later spent 19 years as a press operator and supervisor at Commercial Press. After he left printing he became a pedi-cab operator in downtown San Diego, and eventually became a dog trainer at ABC School for Dogs, with his dear friend David Ruiz, until he retired in 2008.
He is survived by his wife Debra, his son Matthew, daughter-in-law Sandra, and his beloved grandson Diego. He is also survived by his sisters Helene Calvert, her husband Steve, and Cathy Flanders, nieces Bronwen Calvert, her husband Greg, and Ali Calvert, his nephew Stephen Calvert, his wife Stephanie, and their children, his ex-wife Barbara, and her daughters Mary, her husband Bruce Nemeth, and Ronda Porter, who he loved as his own daughters. Mary and Ronda also have children who he considered his grandchildren, and their children are his great-grandchildren. He was a man truly blessed, as we all were to have him in our lives.
He is predeceased by his mom and dad, two infant brothers, and his nephew Philip Calvert.
Frank loved to cycle with his friend Rick, he loved to camp with his friend Paul, he loved to hike (he was so proud to have climbed Mt. Whitney in his youth) and he loved to cook for his family and friends. One of his favorite activities in life was attending Chargers games with his son and friends, and tailgating in the parking lot. He will also be remembered for his kindness to animals, especially the dogs and cats he has adopted over the years. They have all had a better life because of him.
Services will be held at Santa Sophia Catholic Church in Spring Valley at 10 am on September 17, 2022 with a celebration of life and reception to be held at the family home in Lemon Grove starting at 12:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Diego’s College account (make check out to Diego M. Flanders and we will deposit into his account) or in Frank’s memory to Shadow Husky Rescue, Inc. (via Venmo or PayPal) or mail checks to 27851 Bradley Avenue, Suite 130M, Menifee, CA 92586). There will also be donation boxes at the memorial for those who wish to donate.
