Frank M. Dettmers Sr. was born June 28, 1934 at Trinidad Colorado and graduated from high school. On March 22, 1952 dettmers joined the US Navy and served with the following units or ships: AKA-20 USS Viego, CVA 15, USS Randolph, DDE871, USS Damao, APA 228 USS Rockbridge, Amphibase, Little Creek, Can Ceu Des Pac (COF Coxswain, USS Caoberve CAG2), Seam Guard, Com FairSD (Admiral's Bridge). He was stationed with RivRon 13. Alfa 28, CCB-1, ATC-6, ATC-54 Vietnam, FIT Training Group, San Diego, CA; VF126 MIRanis SOSP Downtown San Diego; Night Ops Supervisors. He was in Campaigns in Korea, Vietnam, the Cuban Blockade.
During his career he received the following awards and medals: Six Good Conduct, Combat Action, National Defence, Korea, Armed Forces Expenditionary, Vietnam, President Unit Commendation, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
By date of discharge on Jan. 5, 1976, he had achieved the rank of CPO Boatswains Mate.
His memorable experiences included the CCB-131-1 sunk by enemy mine in hunid forest, Oct. 23, 1969 at 1612 P.M. Four injured, three VAC. Estimated 500 pound mine. In 1960 on board USS Danato, DDE 871 Crossed equator while chasing a modern day pirate on the Santa Maria. He was given asylum in Recife Brazil.
Dettmers was married to Marlene J. Dettmers (deceased) and they had the following chilldren: Debra Lynn, Diana Jean, Frank M. Jr., Eugene Frank. Grandchildren are Tiffany, ScottYoung Jr., Derrick Young, Frank III, Alexander, and Wyatt.
In civilian life, Dettmers worked 19 years on Turbines, assembler. He retired Jan. 31, 2004.
