Edward John Silva “Ed” was born on August 31, 1921 in Somerville, Massachusetts to Joseph Silva and Evangeline Costa. His parents both immigrated to the United States from Terceira Island of the Portuguese Azores and became United States citizens. They met each other in Massachusetts, were married, and had three other children besides Ed: Joseph Silva, Jr. (deceased), Irene Riedel (deceased) and James Silva, a resident of Massachusetts.
Ed grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts where he played ice hockey, soccer and was the captain of the Lexington Senior High School golf team. After the United States entered World War II, Ed was inducted into the United States Army Air Corps in 1942. He attained the rank of Second Lieutenant and served as a bombardier flight instructor until the war ended and he was honorably discharged in 1945. Following his service in the war, Ed returned to Massachusetts where he attended college at Northeastern University in Boston. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Northeastern in accounting in 1952.
He then worked as an accountant in New York, Florida and eventually California. Ed worked in Los Angeles and also took graduate school classes in business at California State University at Fullerton. It was at that time that he met his future wife, Dorothy Louise Michaels “Dotty” at the Joe Lanza Dance Studio. They shared many common interests – including their favorite of ballroom dancing. Ed and Dotty were married on August 23, 1958 and began a family of their own. In 1961 they adopted son, Dirk, and in 1963 they adopted daughter, Linda. Ed and his family then moved to Orlando, Florida where he worked as an accountant for Snow Crop. Later, the company was purchased by Minute Maid and the Silvas moved to Houston, Texas. Minute Maid was then acquired by Coca-Cola Company were Ed worked until his retirement in 1984.
Ed and Dotty then moved back to California and settled in San Diego. They spent many wonderful years together enjoying traveling, playing golf and spending time with Dirk and Linda and their families in Southern California. Dotty passed away in 2012 following a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Ed was a devoted husband throughout her illness as they shared their last years together in the Vi at La Jolla Village in San Diego. Following his wife’s death, he continued to live at the Vi and enjoyed life by listing to music, sightseeing and painting. Ed passed away peacefully on July 5, 2018. He is survived by his son, Dirk Silva, daughter in law, Linda Gall Silva, and grandson, Nathan Silva, of Claremont, California; granddaughter, Kathleen Silva, of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Linda Silva Renouf, grandson, Christian Renouf, and granddaughters, Rachel Renouf and Sophie Renouf of Sydney, Australia; and brother, James Silva, of Peabody, Massachusetts.
