ENCINITAS -- LaVerne was born Edna LaVerne Stanton on July 9, 1925 in Yuma, Ariz., where she met Sidney Shaw, who was in the Navy and stationed there. They married on March 22, 1944 and remained married for 69 years until Sid's passing in 2013. Upon moving to Encinitas, Calif., they built their home and bought Surf Cleaners in 1946. LaVerne was one of only two women in the state to have a dry cleaning license. LaVerne was president of the Jr. Woman's Club and a member of Eastern Star. She served on the PTA, taught dance at San Dieguito High School and was actively involved in the future planning of downtown Encinitas. After retiring in 1983, Sid and she formed Encinitas Land & Cattle Co. to manage their downtown properties, which they did until they passed. LaVerne began playing tennis in high school and at the age of 16 she won the Arizona State Championship girls singles. She remained an avid tennis player well into her senior years and was a member of the San Dieguito Tennis Club in Encinitas. She is survived by three brothers and sister-in-laws: Ed and Blanche Stanton, Dick and Martha Stanton, and Ron and Gloria Stanton. She has three daughters: Robin, Cyd and Vickie; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren, with another on the way.
