Dorothy Filippone Delasalas was born November 25, 1934, in a little house on Kettner Blvd., San Diego, California to Gaetano and Giuseppina Filippone. She navigated her educational journey through Washington Elementary School, Roosevelt Junior High, and San Diego High School. She graduated from San Diego City College Cosmetology program and worked as a beautician for many years in San Diego. On October 27, 1968, Dorothy married Joseph Delasalas at Our Lady of the Rosary church in San Diego and together they raised two daughters, Lisa and Renee.
Dorothy came from a large Sicilian family where she was the youngest daughter of seven children growing up on Laurel Street. Dorothy’s childhood home had a basement room that was always the center of activity, filled with family, friends, energy and many stories. Dorothy was an excellent cook of Italian dishes; a skill she learned from her mother as they cooked together for everyone who came through the door.
Dorothy and Joseph just recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary and renewed their wedding vows every year at Our Lady of the Rosary church in Little Italy on the day they were married. Dorothy and Joseph were world travelers. In 1989, Dorothy and family moved from Coronado to Naples, Italy for her husband’s new work assignment. While living in Italy, they took advantage of the opportunity and traveled through Europe, the U.K, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, and Israel. They even had an opportunity to meet Pope John Paul II at the Vatican.
As residents of Coronado, Dorothy and Joseph attended mass at Sacred Heart church, cooked spaghetti dinners, concerts in the park every summer, won awards at the flower show, book clubs, and attended daily water aerobics at the community pool. Dorothy earned the title ‘Deep End Dorothy’ for always exercising in the deep end of the pool.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Joseph, daughter, Lisa Delasalas, spouse Mart Bushnell, daughter Renee Delasalas; and three grandchildren Mart, Laurel, and Kane Bushnell.
