It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Alan Lamar on January 5, 2025. Alan (as most people knew him) was born June 26, 1947, to Albert and Virginia Lamar. Alan is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Kathy Lamar; his brother, Kenneth, sister-in-law, Diana; his children, Kristin and Billy; his son-in-law Nik and daughter-in-law Angie; his granddaughter, Arianna; and his treasured dogs, Finn, Yogi, Agassi, and Rummy and bird Buddy.
As the son of two active-duty military parents, Alan grew up wherever his parents' orders took their family. Like his parents, Alan also felt a duty to serve his Country. Even though an eye condition prevented him from being drafted, Alan voluntarily enlisted in the Marines and served in Vietnam. When he retired from the Maries, Alan joined the Army National Guard. Alan dedicated his life to serving his Country, his family, and anyone in need... especially for his four-legged friends!
After he graduated from San Diego State University, Alan started working for the San Diego Unified School District as a bus driver. He moved his way up to becoming a transportation supervisor. Alan eventually retired from the School District around 2010.
Alan had a lifelong love for animals of ALL kinds and helped raise countless dogs, cats, and birds. Alan's love for animals was practically spiritual, as he liked to joke that "DOG" was just "GOD" spelled backward. Alan believed all animals deserve love and care. Even in his final years, as he battled Dementia, Alan's desire to help others and his unwavering love for animals remained constant.
Alan's kindness, support, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of service, compassion, and dedication to people and animals will continue to inspire us.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests you make a donation to either the San Diego Humane Society or the San Diego Alzheimer's Association in Alan's name.
A committal for Donald will be held Monday, January 27, 2025 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Dr, San Diego, CA 92122.
