David was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on January 26,1943 and lived in Ann Arbor, MI, Corvallis Oregon, and lastly in San Diego, CA. He attended Harvard University where he studied American History and Chinese languages. He worked many years for the Greyhound Bus Company and enjoyed travelling in western USA. He especially loved the national parks of Utah. Later in life, he resumed his love of history which he taught until the age of 75 at community colleges in California.
David, following the lead of his Quaker parents, was a great lover of nature and enjoyed many summers at the family cabin in the remote lakes in northern Ontario. A lover of animals, he was used to a house full of unusual pets, particularly the army of various turtle species his mother kept as pets. David and his mother, Julia, visited the local parks wherever they lived to feed the ducks, even bringing injured ones to their apartment for recuperation. He was also a great acquirer and reader of books, and in later life, a strict vegetarian.
David maintained his interest in China often expressing verbally and in articles his concern that the USA was endangering itself with too much dependence on the Chinese economy.
Thanks to David’s friend, Joey Koch, who showed much kindness to David in his last years.
David was preceded in death by his parents E. Wendell Hewson and Julia O’Brien Hewson, as well as his sister Barbara DuCharme. He is survived by several cousins. Cremation is under the direction of Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary, San Diego.
