David Carlton Bodine passed away on April 23, 2022 near San Diego, California.
David was the second son of Carlton and Marilyn Bodine born at the Swedish Covenant hospital in Chicago, Illinois on January 9, 1954. He started life in Evanston, Illinois and moved to Zeeland, Michigan before he was half a year old. When David was five, the family moved to Homewood, a south suburb of Chicago, where David spent his growing up years alongside his five brothers and one sister. Holiday gatherings with lots of local cousins were opportunities to goof around as often happens when about a dozen boys get together. At a young age, David took interest in playing guitar and this musical past time gave him pleasure his whole life. After high school graduation in 1972, David completed two years of academic studies at Prairie State College. In 1975 he enlisted in the United States Navy and found his niche through training as a “Class A” Interior Communications Electronics Technician (ICET) stationed in San Diego, California. His active service years on the USS Dixie, a destroyer tender, allowed for travel throughout the Pacific as well as growing expertise in electronics. David finished his enlistment years in the United States Naval Reserve as an Electronics Technician (ET) in the United States Naval Calibration Lab. During that time, he also earned an Associate of Science Electronic Technology (ASET) degree from Cuyamaca College (1980), as well as gaining employment in the electronics and technical communications field. In addition to being proprietor of a testing and calibration lab (DB Labs) and later an engineering and electronics business (BTEE), a number of David’s career jobs were for military defense contractors including Rockwell Collins where he retired in 2019. Colleagues commented on his care for fellow employees and his helpfulness to them. Close friends and those David worked beside have many memories of David’s enthusiastic support of the Padres, his sense of humor, and his penchant for practical jokes.
In 1995 David married Tamara Voronina in San Diego. They enjoyed sharing common electrical engineering and technical backgrounds as well as delight in travel. David and Tamara scheduled numerous cruises together as well as asking other family members to join them. Various career needs moved them out of their beloved San Diego to the Northwest for several years, but after Tamara retired, they chose to move back to where their relationship started. They loved and supported each other through the ups and downs of life for nearly 25 year before Tamara’s death in 2019.
David’s technical career spilled over into his hobbies and he enjoyed testing, repairing, and using many types of audio and other electronic equipment at home. He had great times with his billiard buddies at the Oaks North Community Center. David’s latest hobby was his restored 1930 Model A and he enjoyed sharing his wheels at neighborhood events. He was proud to be a member of the San Diego Model A club.
David is survived by his mother Marilyn, step-daughter Irina Kolobova (Thomas Reaves) and their two children, Alexandra and Tatiana, step-son Viktor Voronin and his daughter, brothers Daniel (Sally), Roy Douglas (Sigrun), Dwight (MaryAnn), Darryl (Deb), Dale, and sister Deedre (Tim) Appelman, and twelve nieces and nephews, and seventeen cousins.
A committal service for David including military honors will take place on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan.
