Longtime Downtown San Diego Businessman
Downtown San Diego lost one of its own recently with the death of David L. Barreras, 78. David, best known for his creation of "Dave's Display World", was a fixture in downtown San Diego for over 60 years. As a young boy, David cut his teeth selling newspapers during the hustle and bustle of World War II. Always one to be drawn to the lights and excitement of a thriving downtown area, David would never leave. Making the downtown area his home for the last 6 decades.
After serving his country in the Air Force, David got his start in the Display business as a stock boy for Jay Display's. Demonstrating a unique love and growing talent for the business, David quickly rose up to creating the window displays and even as a buyer for the store. In a very short time, David had earned the trust and confidence of management, and was given more and greater responsibilities. It would not be long before David would open his own store.
David's vision: "Dave's Display World" would open its doors in 1962 at the corner of 10th and B street. Dave's Display World was a hit and would quickly outgrow its location. David had his eyes set on a new location across town. A much larger property with several buildings that could accommodate his expanding business, and of course it had plenty of large windows for his wonderful Displays. It was the Packard Auto Dealership on Kettner and Ash street. David was always proud to say that he and the owner agreed to the sale with a firm handshake. David had a way with people.
In 1978, even after a major fire that burned down the main building, David never let that stop him, or his beloved Dave's Display World. He never wanted to let down his hundreds of loyal clients and customers. He quickly built up and restocked what was the service building of the Packard dealership into what would become "Dave's Display World" until it's closing in 2005.
David's love for family was very evident. His beloved mother and father worked at "The Store" as well as his partner in life Bill Abernathy, his sister Vera, and niece Diane. David always cared for and felt a deep sense of loyalty to all of his employees over the years.
David is preceded in death by his beloved mother Lola and father Joseph, sister Vera and brother Joe Jr.
David is survived by: His sister Rosemary Melanese, niece Diane Wheelock, and nephews Peter Melanese, Joseph Barreras III, and Michael Barreras Sr.
