Beverly Beatrice Taylor-Brooks was born to Peter and Madie Lee Coleman Taylor on August 1st 1931 in Chicago, Illinois. Beverly was the first of six children born to this union. Beverly spent the first 12 years of her life in Chicago and in 1944 moved with her family to La Jolla, California, which was her mother's hometown. She was educated in the San Diego Unified School system. Beverly had a beautiful singing voice. She was awarded a scholarship to attend a summer music camp at the College of Pacific in Redlands, California. After graduation from La Jolla High School in June 1950, she moved to Los Angeles, California and attended a nursing school there. After completion of her schooling, she moved back to La Jolla. In 1952, Beverly met and married Lawrence Brooks. From that union a set of twin girls was born. Beverly had a second set of twin girls eight years later. Beginning at the age 12, Beverly worked at various jobs and always helped her family. Her final work experience was as a Recovery Home Director with Tradition One in San Diego. She ran the Newton Street facility for almost twenty years. Beverly became a Christian very early on. As a youth, she served as President of the Church*s youth group at Greater Prince Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church by the Sea for 4 years. As an adult she was a very active church member. She served as the church secretary for several years and was a member of the Choir. She worked in various positions at the Church for many years. Even in her last few weeks of life, Beverly continued to have a love for the Bible and participated in a weekly group Bible discussion with one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Beverly suffered a stroke on May 31, 2008. After her stroke, she gave up her apartment and moved in with her daughter Doreen and her family. While with her family she enjoyed her time with them and attended many family events. However, her health continued to decline. Beverly was admitted to the La Jolla Nursing facility and remained there until she passed on March 3, 2012. Beverly is survived by her four daughters, Lori King, Letitia Martin, Denise Waller and Doreen Brooks-Gamble who tended to her with love and efficiency during her illness. She also is survived by her beloved grandchildren: James Jones, Kenneth King (Morgan), Nicole King, Renessa Floyd, George Gamble II and Beverly "Janae" Gamble; her three beloved great grandchildren, Nyjah King, Kenneth King Jr. and Colin Podhaski-King; one sister Lorenza Taylor-Pace; two brothers William "Cookie" Taylor and Raymond Taylor. Additionally, she is survived by relatives of the S. Slayton and D. Sydney families of Los Angeles, California along with the P. Goffman and T. Pye families of Chicago, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Madie Taylor, two brothers Peter Jr. and Coleman "Butch" Taylor and her beloved first grandson Bertand V. Martin Jr. She leaves a host of other relatives and friends.
