Barbara Ann Byall Horst

Barbara Ann Byall Horst (Barb) sadly passed away on July 8, 2023 at her home in Escondido, Ca. at the age of 87. She was a loving and wonderful (The Best) wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed.

Barb is survived by her husband John Horst, her three children, Jan, Chuck and Scott, three grandchildren, Malia, Joel, and Alex, and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Tom Byall and his family from Colorado Springs.

Barb was born in Columbus, Ohio to Mac and Ruth Byall where she attended High School and later Youngstown State University. Barb and John married in 1952, eventually moving to Austintown, Ohio where they started Dale Cleaners. In 1965, they moved to Canfield, Ohio where they raised their children. Upon graduating from various universities, Jan, Chuck and Scott decided to move to San Diego, a move that Barb encouraged so that they could be close and supportive to one another. In 1986, John and Barb sold their Canfield business to join their children and grandchildren. The following year, they bought Margaret’s Cleaners in La Jolla, where Barb was instrumental in the success of the business. In addition to co-owning the business with John, she was the controller, final inspector, and helped lead Margaret’s to becoming an industry leader.

Barb loved being with her family, good friends, and her dogs. She loved the holidays, especially Christmas, and made sure every event and birthday was special and memorable always including lots of good food. She also loved flowers and her exquisite garden.

The family will remember Barb as a wonderful wife and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who encouraged them to pursue their dreams and goals.
