She was born on May 26, 1927 in El Paso, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, 12 siblings, and husbands, Benjamin R. Gonzales and Robert H. Anderson. Velia is survived by 3 remaining sisters, her daughter, Gloria R. Meltzer and her son, Gary L. Gonzales. Velia is also survived by 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandsons.
Velia was a military spouse for 21 and a half years with her first husband, Benjamin. They lived in Japan, Panama, Texas, New Jersey and California. She developed many life-long friendships throughout her travels. Benjamin passed away on Nov. 10,1983. She married Robert H. Anderson on Feb. 4, 1988 and was widowed again on Sept.15, 2004. Both her husbands served our country, and Velia subsequently became active with a military widows group in San Bernardino, which she enjoyed greatly.
Velia’s life centered around family and home. She dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her loved ones, near and far. While we earned our degrees and pursued our careers, she generously gave her time, love, and support to us, and her grandchildren. She was the central link in maintaining relationships with all her siblings. nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends. She never missed an opportunity to send a celebratory card or gift for all occasions. When Benjamin passed away and Velia married Robert, she bestowed the same care upon his family and grandchildren.
She loved cooking her favorite meals, and setting a beautiful and welcome table for others. Velia was never too busy to “lend an ear’ or to help someone with problems or in need. Velia was diligent in bringing her children up to know the Lord. Faith was a strong underpinning in her life and she enjoyed sharing her faith journey with others. She would send “Christ In Our Home” devotionals to family and friends near and far. She had a collection of “special prayers” that she said daily, along with numerous other religious texts. Velia’s legacy of love, generosity, and compassion touched the lives of many and left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her. A handwritten note dated 1999, attached to her will, expressed her love for her children, admonished us to maintain relationships with family, and to “keep the faith always.” It ended with this from Matthew 6:33. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
