Manuel O. Rodriguez, age 97, of Grand Terrace, California, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2023. He was born on March 9, 1926 in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico. As a young child he helped support his widowed mother and younger sister. He came to the United States with his mother and sister and settled in San Bernardino where he met and married the love of his life, Leila Bargas.
Together they built a life with their eight children, in later years twelve grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and one on the way. They both worked to start their own business in Redlands, The Lucky Linda Market and gas station to which they added a small Mexican restaurant. For ten years, Manuel simultaneously worked with the Santa Fe Railroad while operating the market and restaurant with Leila. They then sold this business and purchased another market in Muscoy which they operated for thirty-two years. Manuel was also co-owner of other businesses. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing soccer and later traveled to various World Cup Matches. He retired in 1986 and he and Leila moved to Grand Terrace.
After retiring, he and Leila enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Other pastimes included golf and rv camping. He served his community as a member of The Lions Club and the Sheriff's Citizen Patrol. He and Leila traveled to England to visit a son who was assigned there as member of the United States Air Force. They also traveled to other European countries.
Manuel is survived by his children Manuel Jr., Mary, Linda, Armando, Antonio, Alberto and Mario as well as his twelve grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and one on the way.
Their first-born child, Yolanda, passed away in 2003 and his wife of sixty years, Leila was reunited with her is 2010. And now Manuel has joined them in eternal rest.
Visitation will be at Mt. View Mortuary in San Bernardino on April 3rd from 4-8 pm with a rosary at 6 pm. There will be a mass at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Grand Terrace on April 4th at 12:00 pm followed by internment at Mt. View Cemetery.
