Beloved wife and mother Josephine “Josie” “Jo” Beatrice Foster, 78, of Highland passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2020. Josephine was the daughter of Vicente and Beatrice Diaz of San Bernardino, California and she was raised in San Bernardino. She graduated from St. Bernardine’s High School in June of 1960. During high school and after, she volunteered to work at a daycare/nursery in San Bernardino run by the Sisters of the Poor religious order from Mexico. She enjoyed this work and in December of 1960, she joined the novitiate for the Sisters of the Poor.
Josephine left the religious order in October of 1972 and started working for Harris Company. In 1974, she began working for the City of San Bernardino at the San Bernardino Public Library, which later became Feldhym Central Library in 1985. During her nearly 30-year career with the City of San Bernardino, she would work for Building and Safety/Code Compliance, Parks and Recreation, and then ultimately for the San Bernardino City Police Department as a Community Service Officer from 1992 until her retirement in October of 2003.
Josephine enjoyed classic movies, cooking, and sewing and she had a beautiful singing voice. She made her own wedding dress and most of her daughter’s childhood clothing and Halloween costumes. She loved Christmas, decorating for holidays and making a production of giving out candy at Halloween. She loved to give hugs and bring cookies to her co-workers. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
Josephine is survived by her devoted husband Steven whom she married in 1974 and who cared for her every day during the medical issues she suffered from until she passed. She is also survived by her loving daughter Mary Foster, her sisters Cecilia Ramirez and Patricia Ann (Marcel) Schuller, and by many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of long-time friends.
Josephine is preceded in death by her parents, Vicente and Beatrice Diaz, brother Richard Diaz, sister Mary Louise Diaz, nephew Paul Diaz, and many dear aunts, uncles, and cousins that she missed deeply.
