November 20, 1915 – December 14, 2022
Elizabeth Agnes (Smith) Jacobs, age 107, of Rialto, California, went to be with her Lord in the comfort of her home with her family at her bedside on December 14, 2022. Elizabeth was born in Walla Walla, Washington, on November 20, 1915 at 3:45 a.m. in the home of her parents Frances Marie (Harris) Smith and William Henry Smith. Mrs. Smith was a housewife, and Mr. Smith was a Porter for the railroad.
In 1919, Elizabeth and her three brothers (Eugene, Leland and Harris) moved to Waneta, Washington, with her paternal grandparents (Agnes Smith Nicholas and Woodsaline Nicholas) who raised them. Later they moved to Yakima, Washington, where she attended elementary school. When her grandfather was hired by the Northern Pacific Railroad, they moved to Satus, Washington, where they lived from 1922 to 1950. She attended the one-room schoolhouse in Satus. She cared for her grandmother and grandfather until their deaths in 1945 and 1950, respectively. In 1945 Elizabeth began working at the Del Monte Canning Facility in various positions in Toppenish, Washington. She moved to Toppenish, Washington, in 1950. She continued to work in the cannery industry when she moved to Yakima in 1954 until she retired in 1985.
Elizabeth married Oliton T. Jacobs, and they were blessed with a daughter, Frances Bea Jacobs. They were so happy to be parents. Elizabeth made many happy memories with her family. She loved being in her kitchen and preparing flavorful meals for family and friends to enjoy. She often made 7-Up Cake (one of her favorite recipes) for family and friends.
She loved serving others. She had beautiful flower gardens. She was often approached to share flowers from her garden in Yakima, especially on Memorial Day. Her favorite flowers were roses and peonies. She also enjoyed being able to serve those in her community who were sick and shut in. She made many visits to their homes, hospitals and long-term care facilities. She enjoyed running errands for them and helping to take care of many of their other needs.
Elizabeth was an active member of Mt. Hope Baptist Church in Yakima, Washington, for over 50 years. She was baptized there in June 1960. Over the years she faithfully served as Secretary and Treasurer for the Women’s Department, Superintendent of Sunday School, Financial Church Secretary, Deaconess, a member of the choir and one of the church mothers.
Elizabeth lived in the Yakima Valley in the State of Washington for over 60 years. In early February of 2015, she and her husband relocated to Rialto, California, where they lived with their daughter. She maintained lifelong friendships from afar and made many new friends during her time in Rialto. Family gatherings for celebrations and holidays were especially happy times that she enjoyed in Southern California. On November 7, 2015, she became a faithful member of Sunrise Church in Rialto, California. She would often share with others the beautiful diversity in the congregation and her joy that it was a church for all nations.
Elizabeth was serious about fulfilling the great commission. Everywhere she went she was a “spark of conversation” while sharing her wisdom for a long life. She constantly would tell of her love for Jesus, how he saved her and blessed her more than she could ever imagine. She always gave God the glory for blessing her with sharpness of mind/memory at such an advanced age.
Survived by her husband and daughter, Elizabeth was a beloved treasure that will truly be remembered and very much missed. Her extended family members include her sisters-in-law along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sisters (Beatrice Steele and Muriel Brooks) and brothers (Eugene, Leland and Harris Smith).
